What's the difference between "Built-in" Ram and...

What's the difference between "Built-in" Ram and just a normal profile (DDR SDRAM)? I'm gonna buy a 1 gig stick of RAM - I already have 768 (One "built-in" 256 megabyte stick and a 512 DDR SDRAM stuck). I'm thinking - can I pop out the built in stick to install the 1 gig stick or what?

Depends on the Mac. Some Macs have RAM that's not removeable, for example the iMac I'm getting soon has 512MB built-in, as in you can't take it out. On others, the built-in may just refer to the stock amount that it came with. What kind of Mac are you talking about?

A 12" PowerBook G4.

Ok, well, if you have one of the early G4 Powerbooks, like a 1Ghz one, they've got 256MB built-in which is non-removeable, so you can add at most an extra 1GB chip to get you up to 1.25GB of RAM.
