Hey,

since there is apple music, do I understand it right that there is no longer any traditional syncing of the music from my mac to the phone via cable? The only way basically is via download from the cloud?

It is SO slow.... :(

While I have no knowledge of this, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that if you open iTunes on your Mac and plug your phone in to the Mac via the USB cable, you will be able to transfer your music to the phone from the Mac. If you have not previously downloaded the music to the Mac from the store, you probably have to do this before you can transfer it to the phone.

Downloading or streaming from the cloud would be for times when you are away from your Mac.

I have lots of music backed up from my old android phone. I have just dragged It into ITunes on my pc, this then copied it over to my phone, roughly 30gb, took 30mins mind, but faster than icloud I imagine!

Yes, that's what you'd expect, but in iTunes it just says under the connected iphone's music tab "iPhone as access to icloud library. Titles can be loaded and played via the cellular network or wifi." (my rough translation from German)
There's no longer the options of selecting which playlists I want to sync or stuff... :(

I stopped syncing music to my iPhone since I kept running out of free space. These days I upload to the Cloud and listen mostly to free music on Pandora.

I have a huge music collection dating back years. I sync it to my iPhone and iPad through iTunes. 99% of it is not purchased from Apple so I can't get it from iCloud.

If you are subscribed to Apple Music, you can only download songs from your iCloud Music Library to iOS. You cannot transfer with the cable IIRC. So you have to upload songs to the iCloud Music Library using iTunes and then use the Music app on your iPhone to download them locally.

If you are not subscribed to Apple Music or iTunes Match, then you should be able to just sync with iTunes.
