Hi guys,

What's the general opinion on Twinkle. I've been having a bit of trouble with it lately (since the update) so have been looking at some other Twitter clients.

Am swaying towards the new Twitterfon as it's excellent, but will I miss out on the userbase of Twinkle?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

Best iPhone Twitter client is between Twitterfon and Tweetsville right now, the rest are all too bloated with over the top graphics in the GUI so they are generally very slow. If you want location awareness then look at Brightkite or Loopt.

The nearby feature is using the twinkle system so if you use another app you'll miss out on that. Nearby is the main reason I'd say use twinkle. Other then that doesn't really matter to me.

instead of making seperate apps i would have liked to see something like tweetsville combined with the twinkle nearby to make it the all in one app. i hate that twinkle is its own network and has seperate everything.

I tried Tweetsville and really didn't like it much, especially compared to Twitterfon. Mainly because the search function on it doesn't even work over here in the UK for some reason!!

Also it didn't save searches, have a "nearby" search or the ability to post your current location.

I really like Twinkle and reckon if it had search and maybe trends then it would be the perfect app for me. I think I'll probably always keep Twinkle as I remember waiting for it to come out on the app store for ages, then using it loads when it did, but it just seems like other apps coming out now may be overtaking it?

There's one coming out soon called "Tweetie" which looks quite promising too.

As an app, it's great and really works well. Unfortunately all these apps are ruined by people spamming it will dull crap.
The quality to noise ratio basically got unbearable, so I ditched it after about a month.

As I say, great app, but ruined by the dullards that use it.

I don't really need to use Twitter searches when I'm on the go and think that really is a fluff feature everyone is adding to their iPhone apps but that is my opinion of course! The only thing I prefer with Twitterfon over Tweetsville is the easy access to Replies as often all I want to do is quickly check if anyone has replied to any of my tweets, the Trends button in Tweetsville is useless to me.

Twitter doesn't really have a location aware based feature, which is why Twinkle uses its own network in addition to Twitter to provide this functionality. I think for location aware features you would be much better to use an app/service that is dedicated to providing just that instead of hacking it into Twitter.

In fact I believe that is the point of Tapulous creating Tweetsville in addition to Twinkle, Twinkle is for those that want a fancy interface along with location aware functionality where Tweetsville is for users like me that just wants Twitter functionality without any fluff.

Tapulous didn't create Tweetsville - another developer did who was hired by Apple. He sold the app to them.

Twinkle, for me, is utter ****. It won't even connect to Twitter right now and only shows me updates from their service. Not all that handy...

Yeah just over the last day or so it seems that Twinkle made my mind up for me. It got really slow, wasn't posting tweets to Twitter and when I posted a pic it would only show on Twinkle too.

Twinkle is ok

I'm using Twittelator Pro these days ... there has been 2 new version out in a week so its actively being improved.

It now downloads upto 200 tweets and remembers your place in the timeline on restart.

I have had Twittelator Pro in my Twitter client rotation for a while but it is just too clunky and slow, the GUI looks nice & fancy but it isn't very functional.

Hopefully the first update to Tweetsville addresses some of the issues like not having the @ Replies on the main toolbar or maybe even making the toolbar customizable like in Remember the Milk.

The toolbar is customizable - go to the "More" button and then tap "Edit". You can move them around like the iPod app's toolbar buttons.

You know I have looked a couple of times to see if that was possible and completely missed that edit button on the top right! Thanks for the tip! I now have a winner for my iPhone Twitter client of choice!

Yea, it's just like the iPod app, the NYT app, the AP app...first thing I did is get rid of Trends and Search, adding in Favorites and Replies.

ha... what rock have I been living under? Totally did not know about that in the iPod app!

PS. I mimicked your signature as it is so short and too the point! :)

Yea, it's great. I wish more apps would have their toolbars like that.

And my signature is pretty nice. I need to update it, though.

[app]Twitterfon[/app] is by far the best Twitter app, especially since the recent update. It's free, looks great, scrolls smoothly, doesn't have the 'bloat' of Twinkle. The sounds and location thing just got on my nerves after a while.
