Easy question - The Dual Processor 5,1. The DP 4,1 is upgradeable also, but you need to do a firmware upgrade, not a big deal. But, the processor change on a 4,1 DP Mac Pro is complicated and fraught with potential bad consequences due to the stock processor's lidless design.

the best canvas to work on is the 2010 2.4 8 core mac pro.

buy some hexacore chips and making it a fire breathing 12 core machine.

most likely the new gtx 980 is going to work in the mac pro.

the new mac pro ssd's work in the old mac pro. or buy a sata 3 pcie card.

The single CPU 4,1?

1) You can upgrade it to dual CPU by changing the tray.

2) You can upgrade it to a 5,1.

3) You can then do all the upgrade which available for 5,1.

Since you can't upgrade a 5,1 to 5,1 etc. So, the "most upgradable" should be the baseline machine, right?
