Other than ruining your eyes, that is.

Apple Silicon Macs already have excellent battery life, does it really matter whether you get 14 hours with a clearly readable display or 14.5 hours with lots of squinting required?

Honestly, when I first got my Mac I thought the ambient light sensor was broken because the screen was always too dark and I had to keep on manually increasing the brightness every time it woke up. What makes this even more baffling is that the equivalent iOS setting only kicks in during Low Power Mode, where it actually makes sense.

Yeah, the point is saving battery, I'm not sure if it's only about a half hour on a day or significantly more. I'd be interested in a test.

I think for most people it's a non-issue, I personally do not experience a negative effect on my eyes from a 50% screen brightness.

I would turn it off if you're manually increasing it anyway (Settings > Battery > Options..)
