A forward slash ("\") showed up suddenly below and a part of the desktop icon for the hard disk drive. It's never been there before, and I have no idea why it's there now or what it means. Everything seems to be running well, but I'd like to know what this symbol means and why it's there. Can anyone explain?

Technically that's a back slash, but it's a common mistake. It's hard to be certain what you're talking about, but I believe you may have renamed your hard drive icon on the desktop to just \, which is right next to the delete and return key.

My first thought was also that the hard drive had been renamed. This is purely a cosmetic change and won't affect anything. Simply select the hard drive, press Return, then type a new name.

I agree with the other replies, sounds like you accidentally renamed your hard drive to "\". FYI: The default name for the hard drive is "Macintosh HD".
