I feel like I'm going to tear the thing if I pull any harder! What the trick to remove these?

There are two little grooves where you can pry with your fingernails when you look closely. Feels much safer than pulling.

those grooves are not actually attachments. The little attachments that secure the tip are on the opposite sides of the grooves. You can see it when the tip is removed.

The bigger trick I find is how to get them back on. Still haven't figured out how to do that easily, and hopefully, I haven't mushed the speakers.

There is only one way to align them properly, it's clearly visible. They just need a gentle push to get back on, never use force!

I see that now....old eyes in a not very well lit room could never see the little grooves or that they are oblong and not round, but getting into better light it is easier to see.

The two little slots on the tips are the air vents that’s used to balance the air pressure. I use my fingernails to pry it gently there.

I know, but nonetheless you can use them to pop the tips off with your fingernails ;)

Maybe. But Apple states that one should pull on the whole thing, which probably distributes more evenly the force instead of locating it in one specific spot. If Apple had intended the grooves to be used to remove the tip, Apple would have said so ;)
