What's this "A" called and how do I disable it?

What is the name of this "A" icon that shows up when switching between keyboard layouts? It keeps popping up when I'm in games (even when I haven't switched layouts) and I can't figure out the name of it and, more importantly, how to get rid of it.

"American English," seems it used to be referred to as "English (US)." No way to disable it at the moment.
