whats this Z68 Chipset business

i just purchased one of the new imac's , kinda noob question, are they going to release some version of current imac with the Z... with that or is that for the next gen

Intel's Z68 Chipset is already in the "Mid 2011" iMacs. Apple got early access to it and when fully utilized, it would bring SSD caching and better video transcoding to the iMacs.

However, it is unknown at this point whether Apple will take advantage of these features - some of it is hardware-based and some of it software based. If anything, we would have to wait until the SSD models start shipping and Lion is released.

yes the new imacs have the z68 chipset which is great as many doubted apple will include.

The Z68 was probably chosen for PCI-Express port bifurcation over the H67 chipset. It may have been chosen simply for the ability to provide that extra bandwidth to the two Thunderbolt ports.

Besides, it's not the first time Apple has gotten first dibs on hardware. Even the Sandy Bridge MBPs have the fixed B3 stepping of the H67 chipset, and did when launched.

i really dont get the buzz about z68 when apple isnt using ssd caching anyways, the whole point of z68 is ssd caching, and since the first bto is 256ssd, then apple isnt using it.
