Whats to come for Apple TV in the UK

As was announced in the US today that the apple TV will be getting live baseball games etc etc.... I was just wondering if anybody knows of any plans of new features for us UK apple TV owners, as at the moment there isnt too many. I mainly use mine for XBMC so I can stream all my shows from my Macbook to it, which in itself makes it worthwhile to me.

What other features would people in the UK like, personally for me things like BBC Iplayer would be great and other on-demand services.

I am really disappointed that iplayer does not AirPlay - I assume the stream isn't compatible for some reason. Here's hoping the BBC make it work.

The iPad app might get updated in the next couple of days. For the moment, I use my PS3 to access it.

From what I understand from people in the industry, Apple hasn't even spoken to anyone in the UK about getting content for Apple TV. At all. There's no dedicated development effort at Apple for anywhere outside of the US.

I would like to see something along the lines of Lovefilm streaming like Netflix in the US. I would return to Lovefilm for this.

They have to enable it. Which I don't think they'll do.

Well why not download it first and keep it on your mac for streaming.

Most shows are out within an hour or so on the BBC site, and this little app makes a HD 1280x720 movie for you to play on your Apple TV 2 in a few short minutes.

It's not instant but it is easy.

You can of course Jailbreak your Apple TV and watch live TV and any previous BBC show through XMBC. Not that I like it much due to the interface, but it's nice to have it on there as an option.

Because if you're going to pirate something you probably aren't very clever if you give your IP address to the copyright owner as you do so?

I'm in the UK, love what the ATV2 can do so far, but more functionality would be fab. Having said that my new Sony Bravia TV trumps the ATV2 with iplayer, lovefilm, so they really need to play catch-up I think.

Might jailbreak mine for XMBC....

You guys are assuming that a company based in California gives a crap about what is on TV in the UK and will alter the ATV to accommodate Brits.

You think Steve Jobs has ever heard of Arsenal or Manchester United to know they are football teams? Or Lewis Hamilton? Or what the red button does on the Sky remote? I'm sure he knows what the BBC is, only because I assume he is a Dr. Who fan. Long live David Tennant.

Apple would have to care about the British market to create an ATV specifically for one consumer market (and a market smaller than that of just California, by the way.) Don't think it will ever happen.

I'm fairly sure these baseball apps are a toe in the market for an ATV app store - then it'll be up to the content providers to write the apps and set the pricing (if any) and Apple doesn't have to do anything but sit back and collect 30% of any fees charged. Of course, here in the UK iPlayer, ITVplayer, 4OD and Five on demand should all be free as they are time limited.

I've been in touch with the BBC iPlayer department, and they said:


"Like other developers in the iOS developer community we are aware of the iPad iOS software release and are looking at how we can enable AirPlay support to enable playout to Apple TVs"

So nothing definitive, but it's hopeful. And as for Apple not caring about the UK, I think you're missing the point. The ATV 2 has been designed to work anywhere in the world; it's now up to content providers to make their content work with Apple TV and Airplay by supplying the appropriate tags to their online content.

I'm not sure how a UK licence payer downloading BBC content (which they have already paid for via the licence fee and can view for free online anyway) from iPlayer to view on their Mac/Apple TV is piracy? Surely that would come under fair use?
