By "Apple devices" I mean all my current devices: M1 MacPro updated with the latest OS, iPad Air3 with the latest updated OS.

What I'm referencing: on the site of understandingwar.org there is an interactive map, when I click on the map, it doesn't "interact", i.e. the graphic shows the progress bar, but nothing actually happens, except the page slowly scrolls down, leaving the map completely static.

This happens in both Safari and Chrome, and on both devices.

1)Am I somehow not properly activating the functionality on these devices?

2)Is it just a quirk of the Apple Oses involved?

3)Is this functionality only available on Windows OS?

TIA!

I'm just seeing a static map with overlays that show the current assessed control of terrain determined.

There are no elements to indicate it should be interactive other than being a map with overlays you can zoom in and out of.

How interactive is it supposed to be? I can zoom and pan, but it doesn't appear that I can click any of the regions. Should they be clickable?

Just a static map that allows one to zoom/pan, see the legend, go full screen, etc. . . . I'm supposing that's considered 'interactive' ;)

Seems too be working today on iPad Pro
Are you sure? It sure is not working for me!

If you click on the link to the interactive map, the link will take you to the interactive map, and in the upper right corner, you’ll find three dots where a list drops down and one of the options is to turn on ”Turn On Autoplay”. If you select that option, what is SUPPOSED to happen, is that you get to see the shaded areas on the map change, i.e. move through the various dates as the military forces take land. That’s what’s SUPPOSED to happen. But INSTEAD what does happen, is that the map stays absolutely unchanged, and the page slowly scrolls down. There’s a “play” button there in the middle of the screen where you can click to have it repeat, but all it does is the same slow scroll of the page, and zero change on the map.

So no, the idea of “interactive” map is not that you can zoom or click on the map or whatnot - the interactive part is that it‘s a little movie that plays which is SUPPOSED to show changes in the map through time. That doesn’t happen.

What I’d like to know is if Apple OSes simply are missing this web functionality, or what. Either way, there’s a problem - can someone check if this functionality is available on Windows? If it’s available on Windows/Android but not iPadOS/MacOS, then that’s worth noting. TIA!

EDIT: it occured to me to check how this works on my iPhone 6S (also with the latest updated iOS) - here the situation is even worse in iOS! If you click on the link, it takes you to the interactive map page, but the three dots in the upper right corner don’t even show all the options that are shown on iPadOS and MacOS! There is no “Turn on Autoplay” option! In fact the page never fully resolves (the top line logo remains fuzzy for me).

FWIW, the link says ”https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36a7f6a6f5a9448496de641cf64bd375” - I think this either doesn’t work on Apple devices - iOS, iPadOS, MacOS, or there is some setting on these devices that I’m missing.

Auto Play is simply a function to allow you to read the page's content without manually scrolling. The page is working exactly as designed. The map's interactivity is the usual pan and zoom functionality.

The Safari browser on iOS is a mobile version of the browser. The Safari browser on iPadOS and MacOS is a full desktop browser. That's why you are seeing different options on the iPhone vs. the other devices. All is working as intended.

When do you see the animated map with changing conditions? I see nothing that would provide that kind of functionality.

there are 2 people listed in the code for the map Kateryna Stepanenko and George Barros <- twitter accounts. Maybe it’s time to give some feed back.
There is an error in the web console of Safari on iPadOS 15.6 - a large script part and its resources isn’t loaded:

Anyone tried to run this in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on macOS with a different User Agent?
