How does www.redcurtainmovies.com do it. Is this site leagle? They have movies on this site that are still in the theaters. Sometimes they have them on there before they are even in the theaters. Dont get me wrong I love it you can download the movies convert them over and they work great in the iphone and the ipod. But how does this site stay up?

From their FAQ:

"Movies on RCM are only links to stage6.com. That is the only way we can remain legal. Unfortunatly, when stage6.com finds a movie which is illegal they remove it, forcing me to also remove it from my site. I recommend that you view this site often, and if you find a movie you would like to watch, download it immediatly, so you can guarantee that it is available for you in the future."

Which leads one to investigate stage6.com which looks like a youtube-style user-contributed video site. The stage6 terms of service demand:

"You may only upload content that you have the rights to upload and/or share. We have the right to immediately remove any content for which we have received notice of copyright infringement."

So, it appears that redcurtainmovies is just a re-branding of pirated films that are uploaded to stage6 in violation of copyright law and in violation of the stage6 terms of service. It seems they're just exploiting the lag between a movie upload and stage6 discovering the material and removing it. It's possible that stage6 is lax or slow in purging illegal content from the site making it an attractive place for pirates to distribute rips of copyrighted films.

Moderator note: Since the site is considered a source of current-run movies outside of their legal availability, forum members may not post downloading or iPhone instructions for this site in the MacRumors forums. You may, however, discuss the site itself and the controversy about it.

I was actually looking for a DivX to Mp4 converter in general...

Which one are you using? Im on Leopard, and I know that there must be a free one out there somewhere....

I can't really say whether or not this site itself is legal, as they're linking to movies uploaded to stage6.com

If the owners of that website are uploading the films to stage6, then I would imagine they are liable.

I love stage6. Their videos are of much better quality than YouTube, or any other video site for that matter.

Oh, about converting DivX to mp4, have you tried iSquint?

Do a Spotlight search for the name of the movie? This is, of course, assuming that you are using a Mac with OS X 10.4 or better.
