What's with Adobe CS5 pricing!

I don't remember Adobe ever doing this before.....the upgrade pricing for the CS5 suites are all based off of upgrading from CS4 to get the $599 pricing.

WTF?!

If I wanted to upgrade from my CS3, they are going to charge me $799!?! The same price as if I was upgrading from Macromedia Studio 8 which came out in 2005?!

I'm more interested in the new features and maybe (cough cough) some more stability. We all know that Adobe doesn't support CS3 anymore and soon won't care about CS4 users.

What's really sad is all the people that went to CS4. They upgraded to CS4 for I believe $400....and now have to turn around and pay $599 to get CS5!

Man I wish there was some real competition for Adobe!

I just did a cross platform upgrade from Win Photoshop CS3 to Mac Photoshop CS5 for $199.00 directly with Adobe. I had to process a "letter of software destruction" to officially terminate my serial number for the Windows version, but it was easy enough to do. I am suppose to get the software May 10th.

Is this higher price for the full CS5 suite?

Yes, the $799 is for a full suite like the Design Premium or the Web Premium.

I currently have CS3 Web Premium. In order to go to either Design or Web Premium CS5, I'll have to pay $799. Only users going from CS4 to CS5 get the $599 pricing.

What doesn't make sense on there pricing structure is......

To go from CS3 to CS4 at the time, the lowest I think was $400 (I think at one point it went to $599). So if I went from CS3 to CS4 and then from CS4 to CS5, I'd end up paying $1000 dollars.

However, if I just skipped CS4, it will only cost $799? How's that make sense to Adobe? Isn't that punishing those that upgraded to CS4 instead of waited like I did?

Ouch ... my oldest son is a freshman @ CU Boulder. I have looked at the prices for software in the University bookstore with envy. For what I am paying for his education, I would like to think I should have the rights to educational pricing on software!
 
Adobe have always enjoyed ridiculous pricing for their products, and it has always been expensive to upgrade from anything but the last version.
 
I feel for you all, but spare a thought for we British people...

I have Production Premium CS3 and i have to pay £750... YES ££££ not $$$$ to upgrade to CS5!!!

Wow. I've heard from a few people across the pond that they are not too happy with the latest pricing...didn't realize it was THAT bad. That's crazy!

Exactly. I do that for my family all the time. For example, $7 Windows 7 Ultimate, or the whole entire Office Suite for like $13.

Photoshop is still $180 at my bookstore, however. Though there are significant discounts on all the suites.

With CS3 being slightly buggy under even Leopard.....I'm hoping that CS5 will be a bit more stable.

Adobe doesn't support CS3 anymore.....so any issues I may have I'm SOL.

I do like the new features of Photoshop CS5, so I'm more than willing to pay for the upgrade.....I'm just not happy about the price.

I have both CS3 and CS4 on Snow Leopard and haven't had any issues.

Generally CS3 has been fine....every once in a while some weird bug pops up but nothing major.

I do like to stay current. I skipped CS4 because I didn't think it warranted the upgrade price so soon after CS3.

Don't get me wrong.....I love the new PS features I've seen so far....so no doubt I'll end up plunking down the money to get CS5......I just wish the pricing was lower.

Off topic, but I haven't really looked at CS5, since I can do what I want with what I have, but what does CS5 offer that you'd want to upgrade? CS4 was definitely not worth it.

64 bit After effects..... it means addressing more than 4gb of RAM and therefor speeding up workflow vastly!!!!

Do you use Adobe CS cos if you did you would know that what may look like a small incremental update actually bears quite a significant upgrade for most!

64-bit Photoshop and some major upgrades to InDesign means I can work a lot faster and don't have to wait on the software as often.
