You know which one I'm talking about...I see this pic on posters and stuff everywhere. Its an iPhone, but the YouTube icon is replaced by the calculator and the notes icon comes before the clock. Why would Apple release a publicity pic thats obviously different from the actual product (not to mention missing a key feature)?

I believe this was just an early concept photo, back when the negotiations with YouTube were still in motion. They couldnt very well announce a feature that wasnt rock solid, so they just left it off for now...

Its funny, I see this pic everywhere. Mags and/or websites use this pic a lot when doing a review on the phone or something. It just strikes me as odd that they'd use a pre-production photo instead of an actual one given to them by Apple's PR people.

it's from when the iphone was first announced. My guess is they just didn't update their images...it wasn't worth it for them to fix it all, probably.

This is correct - the original iPhone marketing didn't include the YouTube application or the iTunes WiFi application - because the first wasn't announced until I think the day the iPhone was released, and the second wasn't announced until after the release and was added to the software with an update. They also changed the calculator icon at some point.

The youtube application was announced about a week before the iPhone was released. The image in question was the standard press shot before this announcement. The calculator icon was changed with the addition of iTunes WiFi in software version 1.1.1
