I've never really had a serious problem with my Macbook since September except for the fact that it stopped reading DVDs... all of a sudden my Macbook got RSD (random shutdown syndrome) and I've gotten two kernel panics today. My Macbook must have shut down on me at least 10 times today... shutdowns are completely random. My Macbook shows no signs of malfunction or anything... fans are not running, temperatures are not higher than usual. I'm about to throw this thing through my wall, it's frustrated me to no end. I feel like I'm using a PC again.

I had to reset my PRAM as well because my Macbook refused to boot without doing it so I don't have a panic.log :(

I'm not sure what to tell you other than you should have it serviced. Sometimes stuff doesn't work as we'd like it to.

The sad thing is that I just had it serviced about 3 weeks ago for an unrelated problem... hate to have go lose my Macbook again. :(

This doesn't explain DVD symptoms, but you might try re-seating the RAM. Did you jar it at some point? Maybe RAM connections are loose.

About the only thing that I think you could check yourself without taking it in is the memory sticks. Unscrew the memory access plate located on the bottom side of the computer, remove both of the memory sticks and then reinsert them. Then run your computer, if it fails again it's off to the Apple Store you go......

One other thought, have you tried running the Hardware Diagnostic Disc?

Is it possible these problems were brought on by installing 10.4.10? As far as I remember I never had one random shutdown before installing the latest update. How do I revert back to 10.4.9?

Sigh, I know it's a pain but I had the exact some DVD problems, I got Apple to replace the drive for free, I re-installed Mac OS X after random shutdowns, installed a zillion updates (as expected), and happy days ever since :) You should try it, re-installing the OS is not going to do any harm, only good.
