What's wrong with the iPad in this photo?

I'm considering buying a used iPad. The seller has listed it with the following photo. Under what circumstances would the display be all white, save for "no SIM" and the battery indicator? It doesn't seem like something I would expect to see under normal circumstances (I've never owned an iPad, so please excuse my ignorance).

I have owned many iPad's and have never seen that screen. I would steer clear unless the seller can send you pictures from the welcome screen.

I would be wary if I could not hold it and inspect in person. Is it still under warranty? You can check with the serial number.

I would request additional pictures and the serial number to ensure it's not a counterfeit device.

Thats only the lighting of the photo. Screen is normal (cool tint) and its a normal lightning cable.

With that being said, I have never seen that screen either. Definitely try to get serial number and try to verify with Apple before proceeding.

Thank you for all the responses. I thought I'd see if the screen was indicative of any known problem, and save myself a journey! The seller says it's working fine, so I think the only way I'm going to find out is to go and have a look for myself...

Most likely they took that picture from the initial setup screen where it says "Hello" in all the different languages. I'm only saying that because I just took pics of an old iPad to sell and one pic came out like that because the camera snapped the pic right after "Hello" disappeared. The No Sim is just because there isn't a SIM card in it.

As chevelleguy3 said, yes it's possible to have that kind of screenshot. I attached pics of iPhone 5 on iOS 9 just after erasing it. It goes through message "Hello > slide to setup" in different languages. If you take a pic just in between two different languages, you get the screenshot like in your pic.

It is all about color balance. You can not make choices based on an image like this due to the poor lighting.

As chevelleguy3 said, yes it's possible to have that kind of screenshot. I attached pics of iPhone 5 on iOS 9 just after erasing it. Of course if the seller was smart, he/she would have retaken the photo, after seeing the result of the photo. If it was mine I also would have taken one before I wiped it with a recent time/date displayed.

It doesn't take long to wipe it again. Why not have them fire it up and show the current date?

Be careful; since the activation lock screen happens AFTER the "Hello" screen, this iPad may be activation locked.

I would not buy unless you could meet the seller in person and verify that you can activate the iPad.
