What's your impression of the MacBook refresh?

Just curious as to what all the waiters/already MacBook owners think.

I'm a little let down by this update, honestly ... they should have updated the minimum HDD and the fact that the Combo Drive model still exists is ridiculous. Also, the price is still the same here in Canada.

The only very serious upgrades it received were:

  • Graphics card update. (Doesn't affect me since I don't do anything 3D.)
  • Upgrade to Santa Rosa, so now you can use 4GB RAM instead of 3.3GB. (Doesn't really affect me much either, I don't see me needing 4GB for a very long time.)

Overall, I'm happy in the sense that my machine is basically about as up-to-date as it was when I bought it. But, I'm disappointed for people who were excited about it.
 
I was hoping for more upgrades. Anyone know where I can get the "old" macbooks for cheap?

Me too! I just traded my boyfriend a new MacMini for his unloved MacBook from February. And, almost a year after he purchased it, it still rivals brand new Macs. For that I am satisfied. Although I'm sorry for everyone that had been hoping for a major update.
 
I wasn't expecting the case re-design but I was kind of hoping for the LED screen option and seeing after reviews if it would improve battery life.
 
Decent. An even better GPU would have been nice. DVD Burner / bigger HD would have been welcome but aren't needed. Apart from that it's exactly what I'm looking for.

I'll buy either the "mid level" MacBook or the BlackBook...so I'll have a DVD burner. Additionally, I have 4GB (2x2GB) and a WD 250GB hdd waiting at home. ;)
 
I think it's a fantastic update! Nothing groundbreaking, but a nice improvement for sure.

I only wish it came out 3 months earlier before I bought my MacBook because the 4GB ram options is HUGE for me, and the better video card was a big issue for me as well.

What I wonder is why Apple doesn't offer a 7200 RPM Hard Drive upgrade option? Could they damage the macbooks because of the heat, though I think that is unlikely.

The usual "have to keep certain options for pros only" mentality I think.


Several people on here and elsewhere have reported good experiences with 7200 rpm drives and macbooks. Its really not a downer considering what Apple charges for the 7200 and how easy it is to swap hds in the macbooks the difference between the "upgrade" and what you can find online is, for the pros anyway, usually less than $50. And you could probably recoup that by chucking the original drive on ebay.

I plan on buying a 200 gb 7200 rpm drive for mine when it finally arrives:D
 
I bought my 2.16 C2D in September and have to say I'm quite relieved by the update. The new machines are "better", sure, but I was dreading a change in form factor that would leave me with something that was obviously yesterday's news. That day will still come, of course ... :rolleyes:
 
A neat little refresh - pretty much everything I would have bet on.

I've read on another forum that the iSight is the same - but to be honest, I think it's a little too early for know for sure, although we will soon.
 
I love Apple computers, they don't seem to go out of date as fast as PCs for some reason (In my honest opinion).

I bought one of the new Black Macbooks that came out in April/May '07 (Intel C2D 2.16ghz|2gb memory|160gb HD|SuperDrive|Leopard) and I honestly didn't think my Macbook would be considered as the *top of the line* Macbook this long. The only upgrades I did was I upped the memory from 1gb to 2gb and I put Leopard on it a week ago.

When I first saw that the new Macbooks were released I really didn't have any feelings that my Macbook was old or out dated. Yes, the processor is now 2.2ghz (Santa Rosa) and the video card is now a GMA X3100, but that's all.

This just seems like a little refresh to me; nothing really that big. Nothing that makes me want to run out and buy a new Macbook :p

My macbook is perfect for me; Leopard and CS3 runs amazing on it. No complaints anywhere

Apple is *not* giving price protection to their vendors for this update, so I would doubt an Apple Store will have any for a deal.

Maybe try a big box store, they might be willing to discount to cost to rid of old stock but with no Apple price protection don't expect to get much off at most places.
 
Exactly what I've been predicting for the past 3 months, except I thought they would get LED backlit displays.
 
Well, given that the non-pro MacBook is marketed as a purely consumer-level product and, for the sake of Apple's revenues, has to remain appreciably distinguishable from the pro line, I thought some of the predicted/rumored updates were a little ambitious anyway. So yesterday's update wasn't surprising, but I am personally a little disappointed. I wasn't even remotely in the market for one of these, no matter what they did to it, but I would have hoped for something a little less conservative.

Processor and graphics card upgrades are significant in my opinion. Sounds like you are trying to convince yourself otherwise even tho you know they are...
