Just curious. I have been using Chrome for a while. It plays nice with extensions and it's integrated across my devices. That said I am wondering if I should give Safari another shot and if so, why?

Safari.

+ Animation of the 2 Finger swipe to go to the previous page
+ Uses a little less space at the top
+ Integration with Ad-Blockers (for me 1Blocker)
+ PiP (e.g. for youtube with right click)

and because I also use Safari on my iOS devices
so...
+ integration with iOS

I use one called Iron, which is basically Chrome but with additional security, the "phone home" stuff has been stripped out. It is great, I really like it.

I find Safari painfully slow. Chrome is a resource hog and yet another way for Google to collect data on me, but Safari is nearly twice as slow as Chrome on the websites I visit. I didn't get any warm fuzzies when I tried Safari in High Sierra either. I hope this improves greatly by the time the final version is released. I would love nothing better than eliminate one more of Google's tentacles from my life. Safari is crap no matter how many times Craig tells me it's the fastest browser.

I'm split between Chrome and Firefox. I use both regularly. Right now I use Firefox for always on private browsing and Chrome for sites I visit regularly to keep logged in.

I never liked Safari. I rank Safari as I would Internet Explorer. The worse is Edge.

I would love to use TOR browser for private browsing. Unfortunately, it seems half the sites I visit block it. Because of all the malicious activity which occurs over TOR. I just like the idea of anonymity.

Firefox, because of NoScript and ridiculous customizing

Have you tried uMatrix for Chrome? While noscript is much easier to use. uMatrix provides more granular control over script blocking.

I am giving Safari a shot. Especially after reading that Chrome is death to batteries. I configured it pretty good and removed Chrome from my dock so I won't be tempted to use it. I do like that it is not cluttered. I think the reason I started using Chrome over Safari in the first place was lack of integration with FastPass. They now have an extention for Safari.

Please can we have an evaluation why to use private browsing, only reason I can think of is for watching porn.

Chrome. I avoided it for so, so long. Once I finally used it, I haven't went back. Blazing fast, very stable, and it integrates all of my tabs/history across my Mac at home, my PC at work, and my phone (Android). There's really something to be said about cross-platform applications, like Chrome.

I've used Safari for 14 years and have no reason to stop. :)

I do use Chrome for the web inspector when working. I've tried Firefox but it's incredibly slow on my Macs for some reason or another.

Chrome , MLB.tv and Directvnow are primary uses on 2 of my mac's

Good to know. I use Direct TV now. Not so much on my Mac but for the free HBO GO.

I agree but I’m finding that Safari does the same if you enable safari iCloud. Full disclosure, I am one day into Mac Safari lol. I do use Safari on my phone and iPad, so I had a disconnect there. It’s seems as integrated as chrome. Chrome does kill my battery hence the curiosity about Safari and it’s claims of running lean.

I used Firefox for years, but switched to Safari within the past month because Firefox was so slow to load everything. There are some extensions I miss (like an exif reader and also not auto-playing videos) but I can live without those for the most part. And I think Safari in High Sierra will not autoplay videos anyway, so I just have to make do for a few more months.

You're absolutely right about the shared tabs feature working across devices with iCloud. In my case, though I have a Mac at home, I have an Android phone and a PC at work, so I'm locked out of that ecosystem. :p Chrome works across all of my devices, Apple or not.

I use several options, depending on the user account that I'm in.
  • For my finance/bill pay user account, Safari with 1Password extension.
  • For my web surfing, a mashup of Safari/Fluid, Chrome/Epichrome, Opera, and Firefox. I like Epichrome more and more as I can use Chrome extensions for my Waze/Weather Underground/Guardian/Google Play Music/Feedly portals and use each of them with an extension set and not worry about having to deal with managing my preferences in Chrome, and Epichrome was updated just today. I'm preferring Epichrome over Fluid now since I can use extensions like uBlock Origin and Dark Reader, especially the latter since I start my day around 4 a.m. most days…
  • I'm looking forward to Firefox 57. Firefox users know why…

I've switched from Chrome to Opera...

Opera supports all of the same plug-ins that I used in Chrome, but Opera is much more "battery-friendly". I find Opera to use less RAM and is a bit more responsive.

I've found Safari to use less battery, can be faster on pages, and the reading mode is ... WOW awesome.

That said, I've come to rely heavily on Chrome - saved passwords, bookmarks, the ability to pick up from any device on any operating system, etc... So I use Chrome.

I used Safari for years after I got my first Mac. But within the past 2 years or so I've been using Chrome after I had crashing/freezing problems with Safari. I needed a browser that worked, and Chrome has been great. It's quick and I haven't gone back to Safari on my Macs.

I use all (S, FF, Ch) of them on a weekly basis. Safari, for me, seems to suck less. FF has had memory leak issues forever, especially when flash is concerned. I used Chrome for awhile, and it had issues with some internal business sites. Been using Safari for a few years as the primary browser.

Safari mainly for it's familiarity and sync across all my devices. It's pretty much the same on my iMac, MBP, iPad or iPhone. I'll often be casually browsing on my iPhone when out and come across something I need to read in-depth so I'll add it to the reading list and it'll be there for me to read on my iMac or MBP (why don't MacBooks have a "i" thing?) when I get home.

I totally get that! I am for the first time in my personal and professional life an Apple only user.

Many cite Chrome but I advise a healthy wariness of Google and insidious data-scraping. For this reason, I use Iron, which is latest Chrome but they have stripped out all the code that facilitates spying. Works perfectly normally with the bonus of a clear conscious that your activity is not being monitored and stored for analysis by some dark cretinous person who should get him or herself a better job LOL.
