Whatsapp consuming battery.

I've been noticing for the past couple of days that whatsapp has been using almost half of my battery.

Is anyone else having an issue?
I have a TSMC chip and I get around 7 hours from a full charge. Which is fine, but it's weird that whatsapp is consuming so much power.

It's just the way the app is coded to run in the background. If you get a lot of messages it'll stay active

Turn off setting- privacy- contacts- watsapp.

You won't be able to see contact in app but when you do add new contact you can toggle on and off again, app keeps updating the contacts in background.

Whatsapp is used as a primary form of communication in my country. I guess, There's nothing that can be done about this then.

True, I also deleted the app. Just wish everyone used iMessage.

They aren't running in the background though. All WhatsApp is doing is making clever use of the VoIP background call. This in conjunction with registering the app for push notifications. The app isn't 'running', it's suspended and waiting for a poke from the OS by sending notification to its handler when an incoming message / call happens. This allows it to get guaranteed notification regardless of state and settings.

If you disable BAR you prevent it running tasks such as contacts import and anything else it has the urge for.

I'm just saying I have BAR off and WhatsApp still lists a lot of background time.

And I do not believe the new VoIP method from iOS 8 onwards is strictly imposed ie the old method deprecated. I believe voip apps can still run in the background using the old method where a connection is maintained. not saying WhatsApp necessarily does this, I was just countering the notion that turning off BAR stops background activity

And the article you link to hypothesises they may be using the new VoIP notifications to execute background tasks that are not strictly VoIP. Those tasks. because classed as VoIP, don't need BAR (see how OP on that article says they turned BAR off). So that's exactly my point.

please stop this "I have a XXXX chip" hysteria, since it has nothing to do with battery life.
Saying that, instant messaging apps are battery hog (even iMessage is ...), and you can't do much about that.

I do this too. whatsapp, snapchat, kik, facebook are a few of the API abusers that let their apps background far longer than Apple allows apps to. Kill these apps manually when you're done using it and you wont see the background drain.

Turn off "save incoming media" if you receive a lot of photo and video. Downloading them from the servers and saving them to your photo library can consume battery.

Did you try force closing the app?
