To everyone's surprise, it turns out that despite their promises – alas – I MUST accept Whatsapp's "privacy" policy if I want to use it at all.

Is there a way to at least limit what they're accessing? I'm in the EU. EU "requested" that Whatsapp doesn't force me to accept yet. Apparently the request has not been granted. I've actually read the "privacy" policy and – nope.

I've got Signal already. However, my Mum, Grandma, etc. are extremely unlikely to switch to another messaging app – I don't think they understand what privacy policy is, really… Has anybody found a way around this? (I assume no.) Or to block them from accessing at least some of the data Facebook wants? I left the Android ecosystem and bought an iPhone specifically so that I don't have to install Facebook or Instagram on it…

Not sure there is a way around this. In all honesty, with companies these days, how much control do we, as the consumer really have?

To me, you have two choices here. Either accept the terms and conditions, or simply as WhatsApp to delete your number and data. I actually did this about 4 years ago...

For real?!?! I'm from the EU as well and it hasn't happened to me yet. That means it will.

I was convinced it won't. Then – now that it did – I went and read the "privacy" policy and it's… bad. I've been searching for articles about how to circumvent this and all I find is "Whatsapp backtracked and will no longer limit the functionality!"

I moved to Signal with everyone else, but I can't quite lose contact with the older family members, and it took Grandma so long to understand what Whatsapp even is that there's no chance of her using Signal.
