Whatsapp media blank after restore

Hi guys!
I searched the forum already, could find other users having the same issue as I do, but no solution.

I had to restore my iPhone 6 from iOS 8.1 to iOS 9.3.5.
I have a Whatsapp backup with chats and media, it's on iCloud.
It's the backup from the app itself, the one you can set to happen automatically every month/week/day.
I restored this backup, since the app asked as soon as I opened it on the new iOS.
All chats are here, the media was downloaded (2.4 GB) but is just white placeholders.
I contacted Whatsapp's support, they sent me a useless standardised email with a link to the Backup and Restore FAQs and didn't answer to my detailed reply anymore.

Do you maybe have a solution to this problem? I don't want to believe I'm the only one having it!

Damn, it looks like I really am the only one!
Didn't this happen to anybody else?
Did I maybe post my question in the wrong section?

it happened to me but a little different: i backed-up iPhone in itunes through USB, erased everything from the phone and restored it right after that.

media is all blank or with question marks... don't know what to do...

I tried another restore...

And it worked...!
