On my Mac with the latest version of WhatsApp (2.2214.12) its CPU usage is rather high with 25% (2017 MBP 13" TB, 3,1 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5, but still) and the fans kick in. It never behaved like this before, can anyone confirm this happens on their machine too?
Even in that background its still very demanding, WindowServer is high as well. It even glitches out at me at some point, maybe something that was messed up with the latest update?
Also >Enter< to go to the next line when writing a message doesn't work anymore and some keyboard shortcuts are reported wrong in the settings, like switching between chats is command tab while its actually control tab.
Meta is in top form to be bought by Musk I say :D

Same here on an 2021 MacBook Pro M1 Pro. Both the App Store version and the standalone versions of WhatsApp are suddenly (and seriously) eating into my battery (100% to flat in <6 hours). Energy impact of 15-20 while it's idling on another space with zero messages coming in or going out.

Tried using WhatsApp web, but that's causing high CPU for Safari and Window Server as well. Basically I can't use WhatsApp on my MacBook atm.

Last time I had a similar problem was with Chrome and their Keystone updater that drained my brand new M1 Pro MacBook in 2 hours: https://chromeisbad.com.

Surprised I haven't seen a lot of complaints about this WhatsApp regression so far.

Interesting that we're not seeing more reports I agree. I just checked the 12 hour energy use on my new MBP M1 and its by far the highest! I'll have to quit the app when I'm not at my desk until they fix this.

Just installed the latest update from the app store (released yesterday), it appears to be fixed for me. 0,43 on the 12h power impact.

Its a Chinese spying app at its core… and it takes a lot of system resources to copy and transmit all that data back to the mother land so they can build their profiles of you and your life…

Same here. When I suddenly hear the fans I know I forgot to quit WhatsApp. It’s incredible. How come they haven’t fixed this and what is WhatsApp doing in the first place?

But it’s owned by Facebook though.
Back up your claims with any form of reputable source and we can talk, until then you’re just spreading misinformation.

If you really believe that Meta is not skimming all available info from Whatsapp then I have a bridge to sell you.

Yeah, no, sorry pal but that ain’t it.
Firstly, this behaviour started with updates to the desktop and web app just recently. The posts are much older than that.
Secondly, the posts say Facebook might read encrypted messages; they have everything they want to spy on on their servers, no need to hog up the CPU on desktops and make it obvious. Also there are no unusual uploads happening and considering the app will continue to hog on the CPU until it’s quit and that it does this every single time it’s open, I can hardly believe it’s spying because my backups (excluding a few videos) isn’t even 900MB big and if FB/Meta is really spying on my convos rest assured they’d Code better than for it to read and copy everything every time without transmitting anything anywhere.
Also, when I said „reputable sources“ I didn’t mean The Sun…

TL;DR: no

Whatever helps you sleep.

What, Forbes wasn't good enough either?
