As I understand it, Monterey was released officially about a month ago but I've never had any prompt to upgrade on my new iMac 5k 27" (Intel). Should I? Or does it rely on me going and looking for it?

Check in system preferences > software update

I don't remember receiving an alert it was available though.

Maybe they only prompt you once it's been a few months - I'm sure it pestered me in the past but maybe not when it was new.

I have a 2017 Macbook and never got notification. I just went to "About this Mac" and clicked on "Software Update..." and it was there.

System Preferences has been offering Monterey for ages. But only today did it start positively alerting (red (1)).

I have been holding off and am probably going to wait for the next update to Monterey before accepting it. Hopefully, that will be soon.
