When can we expect Update 1.1?

When does everyone think Apple will release iPhone software 1.1? There are a number of problems with 1.0, but the issues related to audio volume are killing me. I'm assuming this will be fixed in 1.1 (otherwise I'll be very unhappy). This update can't come out fast enough for me.

Doesn't Apple typically take about a month to issue an update on a new product?

According to the development team, July 16th will be the release date. Updates include audio quality, optimized syncing, better office doc handling. Safari stability has been greatly improved. Several new features including the ability use the camera as an x-ray machine. Naturally, 3G has been added.

My crystal ball told me all of this. Anyone interested in buying a bridge?

Funny how everyone expects a software update so soon. While there very well could be, there has been no promise from Apple to update the iPhone. They only said they COULD, which is a big difference, obviously.

That said, I would love an update to my iPhone, but I'm not holding my breath. Everyone is so caught up in what might be in the update when there might not even be one for a long, long time.

That would be very disappointing. There are SO many bugs in the phone that I feel completely justified to still carry my RAZR as a backup, with it's number (my main one) just forwarded to the iphone.

And, when the program actually work, they lack some very important features that make them almost completely useless for me most of the time. With the email application's lack of sort and identity management, I can only use it to interact with about 1/4 of my email on my personal account.

And the lack of true IM capability also seriously limits the usefulness of the phone. My RAZR fully supports IM, why wouldn't this stupid thing?

That said, I fully agree that this is one of the best implementation of a user interface on a mobile handheld device.

I sure hope that there is an update soon that fixes the bugs and crashes that happen regularly, and I hope that they add the much needed features that are lacking soon, so that the iphone can realize it's true utility.

Yes, they only said they could, but Steve talked about how plastic keyboards were a problem because when new apps are written, you might have an obsolete UI, and how this wouldn't be a problem with the iPhone.

If they're touting this as one of it's features and strong points I'm fairly certain that they will have updates.

Also, Walt Mossberg seems to be fairly certain that there is flash coming, because in all of his reviews he has said 'no flash yet'. Maybe Steve slipped him a little info for his good review.

My guess on why an update hasn't come yet is because Apple is most likely working around the clock to get Leopard up and running because of their delay. I'm assuming many of the people who built the OS for the iPhone are also working on Leopard. Once they're done with that they can come back to our precious.
So come this fall or shortly after, we will certainly have an update.

Yes, the fall of July is upon us and so is the update.
This is Apple we're talking about. They update is being worked on since before the release of the phone.

Steve wouldn't sit on that. I'm still hoping this week but it is most definitely going to be in July.

There's no way they wouldn't. Go get'em Apple Engineers. :p

I tend to agree that an update is coming. Its necessarry because if they sat on their hands for even a few months all those missing features would be hacked in (think custom ringtones, and I hear that hackers are close to building some kind of SDK for apps).

Everyone is assuming an iPhone software update is gonna be free. It strikes me that it would make more commercial sense to treat the phone like a mini computer (which is effectively what it is anyway), and release periodic updates to the operating system. Bug fixes and minor updates free, but...

Leopard Mobile Edition at $49 in October anyone?

There will be and update and it will be free. That is what I think. Apple will certainly address stability issues if not add new features.

Remember when Apple announced the accounting practices they were going to use to recognize revenue of the iPhone and AppleTV? They announced they would recognize all revenue over the course of a two year period. This would allow them to offer new features and updates for FREE while still complying with a certain act (I'm not remembering the name at the moment).

I don't think Apple would change their accounting practices like this if they didn't have the intent of releasing updates.

They'd shoot themselves in the foot, especially considering the cost of the phone itself. Every phone I've had, hell even the Windows Mobile smartphones, all had free software/firmware updates. If they're trying to enter the cell phone arena by doing things better, that is definitely NOT the way to do it. With that said....it's entirely within their power to do so.

As to when one should expect the update......I'd say a good bet is when you sync the phone and iTunes asks you to download it!

Source? Lets think about this. Just weeks after release tyey are going to add festures? Highly doubtfull. It would only be resonable to fix problems and improve stability. Why would thry add more features to a platform that already has a few glitches? Adding features that could potentially be troublesome makes no sense at all.

The current release has been around for a long time. They have been developing a new one for a while. I met a higher-up of Apple marketing on the NY Subway near the SOHO store who reminded me to update my phone when a new update is released by month end. I asked him specifically whether it would be anything new or just stability and he said it will definitely include iChat and Copy-Paste feature.

No need to post how you don't believe me. It's a waste of your time. Just relaying the info. We'll see in 12 days if it pans out to be true.

Being a software developer, I agree with Krimedog's assessment that the current software version has probably been out for quite a while now and they have more than likely been working on improvements and enhancements to it for a while now. A constant flow of requirement changes is pretty common in the software development world. Meaning, they are probably constantly working on making enhancements and improvements to the version that is currently in production.
