When do Airpod Pros disconnect?

I have AirPods Pro and I noticed that pretty often (ok most of the time) when using them with my iPhone 12 - have not checked this on my iPad mini 5, Apple Watch or iMac yet - and I take them out of my ears, the iPhone still shows AirPods Pro connected. I assumed that taking them out of one's ears would disconnect them from a device. Or do you have to either put them back in the case or connect them to another device for them to actually disconnect from the currently connected device? Thanks
