Seems odd to continue selling AirPods 1,1 and show off AirPods 1,2 at the Apple Event (with LED on front, and wireless charging) and not give a price (can only assume the same as it is, $159) or even a release date,

Especially considering they are, afaik, Qi charger compatible, and could be used with 3rd party charger pads as soon as they are available in stores.

It'll be an optional upgrade. You might be able to get them with the AirPods at a higher price with the new case, but it also be sold separately too.

I’m referring to a release date and price (that I assume to be the same $159) of the updated AirPods, not this multi-device charging pad

Sorry if that wasn’t clear.

Apple.com still selling version 1 AirPods

I think you got confused with my post. The wireless charger is sold separately but I believe they might give new customers the option to upgrade it when they purchase it in the future.

What a cluster! I would hope new buyers could buy the wireless case without a separate purchase

Yeah it’s unclear, I know it’s an optional upgrade but not making it available to new customers will really make them look scummy. Haha.

I wonder why they even bothered presenting it the other day?

Just to show off the AirPower. Hmm.

Still i think showing phone and watch charging together on same charge pad alone would’ve sufficed

I guess i wonder, since they said “to charge your Apple Watch 3” — will the chargepad work with 0/1/2?

Yes you buy the airpods as normal and the option to buy na wireless case that doesn't include the action AirPods themselves will become available in December

I guess that’s smart from their perspective of not stopping or slowing sales of current AirPods, but gross...

I don't recall them saying anything about upgraded AirPods, only a wireless charging case. According to reports, that case will be available in December for $69 as an optional accessory.

My assumption since the expected and replacement prices are the same, new air pods will come with the wireless charging cases standard.

This is what I'm thinking. Which means it makes sense to hold off and wait until December before purchasing AirPods. I doubt they will want new customers to pay full price for AirPods (including a case they wont use) and then purchase another case for 69. Unless they have two options, (a) without charging case for a lower price, (b) with charging case for a slightly higher price.

Now that the new iPhones include Bluetooth 5.0, will an upgraded chip be in the AirPods or will that revision come later. Only a small number of active iPhones include Bluetooth 5.0 so Apple might not think its worth including yet as it increases their BOM and lowers their margins I assume.

Would have been great to have some more information

What, by releasing a new feature that you don't have to buy?

If they weren't going to sell the charging case separately then maybe, but they will.

Wireless charging AirPods and case should be the default AirPods sold now. Having to buy the AirPods and then a separate wireless charging case is ridiculous.

No, it shouldn't be the default case sold with AirPods now. It's not due until December. And - I haven't seen the actual communication yet, but everything points to AirPods coming with the new case when it becomes available. Why do I say that? Because the price is the same as the replacement case sold today.
