I've never bought a Mac on the day it's announced/launched - it's always been a few months later after I've read all the reviews. And of course, by then - you know all the details of the machine, like if you can upgrade the memory yourself.

If a 2020 iMac is announced Monday - and it became available for order that same day - would we know if the RAM is upgradable?

Do they announce that when they introduce a new Mac? Or - do we not find out until after it's been reviewed?

Mostly likely you would find out the same day. It will be a lot of peoples question. Something of a change such as that will not stay quiet long I'm sure.

iFixit will do a complete teardown pretty much immediately after the device is available to the public.

Some times Apple explicitly states the exact type of RAM, which tells you if it is even possible, or they don't.

Patience.

Ahhhh...

I'm thinking about people who order one immediately - I'm imagining if Apple introduces it on stage (or virtual) and say it's available for order later that day etc - and how people know if they should order it loaded with the RAM they want or - if they wait to find out at a later time thereby maybe suffering longer processing and shipping times...

I wondered about how quickly we will get hands on observations given the pandemic and nature of WWDC this year.

So true... It's not like people can just leave the auditorium and go have a hands-on experience in the next room with all the display models 🤣

You'll probably know the day it's announced.

Hmmm.... a prediction...
For years now, we've heard the cries "get rid of the chin, and make it thinner".
Well, OK, Apple may just do that.
But... in the process of "making it thinner", they may also eliminate the "openable door" that allows users to access RAM on the back of the computer.
Thus, even if the RAM remains "socketed", it may become VERY difficult to "get at"...
(just as it is in the iMac Pro)

I can see them removing the RAM door for the larger model, but having RAM slots on the logic board like the 21.5.
