When do you think AI will come to English other than English-US?

Just some light hearted discussion. I have an iPhone 14 Pro which needs a new case and a new battery.

Now I don’t want to invest in these things if I will buy a new phone in September. Which is where this discussion comes in.

From WWDC, the only feature that would make me upgrade is AI (specifically the non-Siri improvements in various apps). I don’t really care for processing power, thinness, slightly bigger screen, titanium or slightly better camera. There aren’t any leaks on any other major software differences coming to the next iPhone.

When do you think Apple will roll out AI to other countries (English, still)?

I know it’s pure conjecture and no one can say with certainty but I wanted to know what people think.

Well there just was an official Apple “here’s everything we announced at wwdc and what will come later this year to ios18” email here in Germany today. And in that email not a single mention of a more clever Siri or Apple Intelligence:(

I knew it’s not coming to Europe as of now but maybe a small “coming later” clue? This makes me reaaaalyy pessimistic about us ever getting it

Yeah I wish I knew if I am getting the 16 Pro. My current phone really needs a new battery (74%)

sounds like most of it is not even coming to US English before Spring 2025 and therefore it is going to be a while.
I see. If that is the case, I see no reason for me to get the iPhone 16 Pro on day 1.

Until Apple gets the go ahead from the EU, you in Germany sadly will not get it and you will not get any clues (as that would undermine Apple’s negotiating leverage and/or violate the DMA).

Where are you located? If in the EU, see my response immediately above. If anywhere else, could be just later than the US. But just change your language to English-US. Problem solved! Other than the EU (and maybe China) it doesn’t sound at this point that region will matter as much the language choice.

Thanks. I am located in Thailand but my language is EN-India. I tried using EN-US, but couldn’t handle it.

Unfortunately, at least at the outset, that’s what you’ll have to use. I’m sure it will come to the other English language localizations next, but who knows when that will be.

Thanks. I would prefer not to use it at all and keep my 14 Pro then

Well, Visual Look Up is still limited to certain languages/regions and it’s been “out” for a while now so it might take a while.

There was no announcement on Apple's website for European countries, but there was for Turkey. This made me happy. But according to the notice, I hope it will come for my native language in 2025. I may be disappointed, but until then it won't be a must-have for me.

Hopefully never. Have we learned nothing from Terminator and Battlestar Galactica? 😘
I recently watched the entire Terminator series from the beginning. That was the only thing on my mind. If artificial intelligence is given too much opportunity, it may see the most dangerous being created as a threat to itself and want to destroy it.

On the other hand, it bothers me that everything is now AI-ized. I think human labor is always very valuable. I really like what Apple has done, because an AI assistant that knows me is exciting. Of course, if confidentiality is not done properly, it can turn into a nightmare.

go ahead on what? Do you understand what the actual problem is? I've heard rumors that it's about the data privacy because in the end it's all openAI Servers which are outside the EU, and that it'll take until the new Microsoft data center in Germany will be completed. But it's could be something else.. It can't be about a monopoly, because they already said they will include other AI services beside chatgpt...

The thinking is that Apple is (A) very reluctant to put out features (such as Apple Intelligence)in the EU that may get banned in the future or that Apple will have to substantially modify in order to keep as they are and/or (B) Apple is using this opportunity to put some political pressure on the EU from constituents angry about being denied these features in order to extract some concessions on the implementation of the DMA.

I‘m not sure if I buy the whole „Apple wants to put pressure on the EU“ narrative, even though it sure feels this way- but I can‘t imagine they would willingly loose so many customers just to hurt the EU somehow.. I think it Probably has something to do with the EU potentially MAYBE in the future wanting to force apple to open up their own systems to third parties, which would destroy the data privacy features of apple intelligence or something. I just don’t think the EU right now has actively put anything in place that would keep them from launching it. Maybe they really worry about some potential issue down the road… or this is about them not being able to scale up the servers for a global rollout of PCC at launch.. let‘s see. I think we will get it eventually in maybe two years or so, which are gonna feel like the longest years EVER. If not, and this becomes some Apple Cash US only nonsEnde I would be really REALLY disappointed.

iPhone is already becoming a „dumb brick“ compared to the competition, and now with apple intelligence they just are about to fix this.. if they keep dumb Siri around much longer, people won‘t buy new phones anymore for that reason alone.

I think Apple may be willing to risk alienating customers to get leverage. The stakes for them are quite high, as the EU is getting quite feisty. I put the chances that the opportunity to tweak the EC is at least part of the reason for delaying this rollout at greater than 60%.

The EU thought Apple would comply with the spirit of the DMA law, but instead Apple did the bare minimum and now they are getting called out for it with fines and will probably have additional rules put in place to force them to be more competitive/less restrictive.

In the meantime, Apple wants the EU to say yes or no on if their current implementation is DMA-compliant before launching it. They don't want to launch features and then have to pull them or redesign them or pay more fees.

Unfortunately, the EU just countered by saying if they are considering holding features back, then the features are obviously monopolistic. The EU seems to have no interest in weighing in on features until they can see how they operate in the wild. Complaints need to be brought to their attention before they will weigh in (similar to how the US Supreme Court does things). So now we have the problem of Apple wants a ruling on compliance for a feature that no one in the EU can test. It's a standstill.

Google is doing the same thing with Gemini Nano, right? Maybe we will hear something from them at the Pixel 9 event in August.

(I caveat everything I said with the understanding that I heard all this on various Mac podcasts and didn't read any actual news articles.)

Probably a long long time considering it’s not even coming to America until next year sometime.

very interesting, listened to some of those. Interesting that they really seem to believe it has something to do with some sort of political power play rather than any actual situation created by the EU in this particular case.

OpenAI isn’t really involved except for the “world knowledge” requests that are sent to them. The rest of the data is kept on device or transmitted to Apple servers that are unable to log any data. I don’t think it is about privacy but just Apple being very careful of launching a new feature if the EU is going to fine them for not allowing other companies to provide the same degree of integration at the start.
