I'm thinking about getting an iPad. I was wondering if I should wait.
It was shocking to see how many iPads apple dropped yesterday.

Apple only dropped two iPads actually (iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4). It was shocking though how many iPhones, Macs and Watches they dropped…

To know when to buy, you should check out the MacRumors Buyer’s Guide. It’s not a bad time to buy an iPad but not a great time either. The iPad Air is very recent, but we’ll probably see a normal iPad (the cheap one) in September. The iPad mini is also already almost a year old but it doesn’t usually get an update every year. The iPad Pro will probably get an update with the M2 in a few months.

However, I think all iPads are fine right now, they all have modern chips etc.

Wait, I thought they only dropped Apple Watch 3 and we all guessed that a year ago.

I'll buy in September then, I guess :)

It depends what iPad you want. If you want the Air, buy it now. Anything else I would wait. The base iPad will almost certainly come in September and perhaps the Pros by the end of the year too. The Mini will be a longer wait but it just doesn’t make sense to buy it when the Air has twice the RAM.

Well yeah, but they’re still selling the Series 3, that’s the shocking part. 😉

If you just get the cheap iPad, you have to know for yourself if it’s worth the wait. The updates to that model are almost never exciting, usually just a spec bump. So it will have an A14 instead of an A13 and perhaps a few details changed. But if you’re not in a hurry, yes, September is the best time to get a new one.

The cheapest one for watching YouTube and Netflix and maybe play a game here and there. I'm currently using iPad mini 2 since 2014 but um…I really can't surf the web like a normal person anymore.

I'm not in that much of a hurry. I can still get by with my iPad mini 2. I just have to be really patient and for whatever reason many sites on Safari aren't really loading anymore. It even struggles with macrumors, so I do need a new iPad soon.
I'll wait, because the newer model will be the same price (I'm assuming) and will be supported longer.

I’m shocked they have the M2 chip for the Macbook air and M2 for the 13 inch Macbook pro but no iPad has M2.

It is showing 407 days gone by and still no update for the 11 inch iPad pro and 407 days gone by and no update for the 12 inch iPad pro.

I don’t know what is going on with Apple. But if they update in the fall that is long ways away.

The iPad air just got updated so will not get M2 chip to next year.

The iPad mini may or may not get the M1 or M2 chip next year.

that's perfectly normal and in line with what they have done in the past

I meant the regular iPad, which Apple hasn't released every year.

Apart from when it was replaced by the Air to Pro 9.7, the regular iPad has gotten annual releases.

5th gen March 2017
6th gen March 2018
7th gen September 2019
8th gen September 2020
9th gen September 2021

I’m guessing there will be a 10th gen sometime between September to November depending on supply shortages and lockdowns.

Well if you want a new Mini the 6th Gen released last fall.

Something important to note is how you intend to use said iPad going into the future? It is looking like the iPad Air and Pro lines are becoming merely Apple’s ultraportable Apple Silicon devices That with M1 (and likely M2 iPad Pro models this fall) will continue to evolve into much more capable tablets going forward. Where as the baseline iPad and iPad Mini will likely be relegated to the more traditional role as iPads have retaining the A series chipsets which as we have already seen with upcoming iPadOS 16 do not receive the more advanced multitasking abilities of stage manager nor external display support. Just be very aware of how you intend to use the device before you make that purchasing decision.

I do not see any difference between them. except the colour. Why a price difference?

It happens sometimes on Amazon I believe, one colour is selected for a promotional price but not the others.
