Just a guess but I don't think we'll see it till after the 3Gs comes out. I think it's more designed for the faster processor in the 3Gs. Also I don't think apple will approve any new apps for release for at least a day because of the server stress with 3.0 release. I signed up for release info at, http://iphone.tomtom.com/

They said it would be out by the time 3gs is released...ie friday

Reviews of tomtom will probably be the deciding factor in if I upgrade to 3gs from 2g or not.

Also price of the app and holder.

The TomTom navigation application for iPhone will be available via the Apple iTunes App Store, following the release of Apple’s OS 3.0 operating system. Details regarding pricing and availability for both the application and the TomTom car kit for iPhone will be made available in advance of the products’ launch later this summer.

Wow, I didn't even know we were getting GPS w/turn-by-turn and voice lol! Can't wait!

Is it an app we have to buy?

Tomtom will be an app, I heard 99cent app and then maps will be in app purchases based on if you want a city, a state, or the whole country.

And fyi, Garmin is also working on a turn by turn app for the iPhone. I personally would wait for that as I think Garmin is #1 in the GPS arena. I am guessing these will not be cheap apps, so its worth considering the wait - I doubt they are too far behind TOMTOM (I think they are dumb to be even 1 day behind, but I digress) in terms of release date.

Really? I haven't heard anything about Garmin. Only Navizon and TomTom. Garmin has their own cell phone in the works, so I'd assume that doing an iPhone app would be contrary to their business plan.

Honestly I don't think this will be necessary since the Maps app still gives you directions and has sufficient GPS. Paying for some voice to speak to you isn't worth it if you ask me.

I wouldn't buy GPS without voice turn by turn. My Garmin Nuvi has it and it's more of a safety feature than anything. You're driving along, listening, instead of reading a map when your eyes should be on the road.

Don't be surprised if the app is only for 3G S. It does have voice which reminds me of the voice feature that the 3G S has and not the 3G or 1st Gen. Apple probably doesn't want to show that it's easy to implement the voice control feature on the older gen iPhones.

Tomtom will be available for both the 3G and 3GS. I think they said 1st gen also but you may have to use the holder for it since it doesn't have GPS built-in. Don't quote me on that one though.

Why would they pigeon hole themselves? If I were Garmin I would most definitely want an app in the iPhone app store. No need to put all your chickens in one basket, it's highly unlikely that everyone that has an iPhone will jump ship to the Garmin phone just because they want turn by turn GPS.

it has voice turn by turn, you don't speak to it, it speaks to you
it also says on the website for iphone 3G

Where did you hear by the time the 3GS is released? At the keynote all they said was that it would be available "Later this summer"

Garmin has officially stated that they are not developing an iPhone application and instead focusing on their own phone coming at a later date.

It seems that accessory manufacturers might be under NDA till at least tomorrow's launch of the iPhone 3GS. I'd imagine there might even be a review from Mossberg if they're selling them soon, if not i'd imagine there will be a lot more news anyhow.

All I can say is there had better not better not be a monthly fee for this app like other ones. Gizmodo posted an article about how these apps may be expensive. TomTom already charges $99 w/o maps on other older mobile phones. I'll just use Google Maps instead or buy a TomTom for $130.

looks like you have to buy the accessory too. I can see needing enhanced GPS the iphone is not all that accurate sometimes.
but to me I want to use it on my bicycle. then I would not have to stop and look at the map.
