When I move messages to Trash they reappear in my Inbox

Most of my emails have imported from Yahoo to Mail. But when I move messages to Trash or Delete, they don't actually go there. They reappear in my Inbox. OR it takes 5 minutes.

I don't understand, these messages were DOWNLOADED to my computer from the servers (as in taking up HD space), so why is it so hard to get rid of them? I shouldn't have to go through the server to delete them...make sense?

So frustrating! My HD space is shrinking and I don't seem to be able to do anything. I need help now!! Thanks.

bump - one thing I noticed that under the Trash files, it says

ON MY MAC

sbcglobal.net

Trash always goes into "sbcglobal.net" and not ON MY MAC, and so it takes a long time to delete them. Why? If the messages are being downloaded on to my mac, shouldn't they go to ON MY MAC? I'm confused.

A couple times I also deleted my account and started over. About half of the hard drive space that I lost didn't come back, even though all my messages were deleted. I DONT GET IT!!!

why are you using yahoo though?


in any event i would start by checking your settings on your yahoo mail page.


i know hotmail (outlook) by default puts your downloaded mail into a POP folder and does not delete them even if you do so in mail. you can change that setting to sincronise between your mail and your web mail service. not sure how yahoo works though... didnt know people still used that service.

What Troneas said. Yahoo uses POP mail which is read only. As well as SBCglobal, I think. Try making a new mail account and set it up as IMAP. IMAP is read ad write, so the mail client can tell the server what's been read and deleted. It can even write to the sent box on the server, so your mail is on your computer and mirrored online.

If the POP server isn't instructed to delete messages after they've been downloaded your client may very well redownload messages after it deletes them. If messages show up as unread once you've deleted them, then that's what's happening.

I think it depends on your Yahoo account. I'm pretty sure my YMail account has IMAP but some other Yahoo accounts I had only offered POP. It has been a while since I've used Yahoo though.
