When my iMac is in sleep mode, the keyboard, trackpad and magic mouse go into some sort of energy saving mode too, right? (to preserve battery life)

Keyboard is still active; how else will you wake it from sleep?

The iMac has no battery, so what do you mean by battery life???

Battery life from the peripherals. So no energy saving while in sleep for those?

You could always just turn off your keyboard and mouse when you're not using them to save battery life in them.

So every time I put my iMac to sleep, I should turn the keyboard and trackpad off? isn't there an automatic power saving?

Only if you want to save on batteries. I find the magic mouse eats batteries like there is no tomorrow. Keyboard and trackpad does not use the batteries up that fast.

Apple's BT mice and keyboards go into a low power state when left unused but are still technically alive/active.

You are correct. when the iMac is in sleep mode, after a short delay, the mouse, keyboard etc go into sleep mode too. Therefore there is no need to switch the peripherals off when not using your iMac.

The average battery life of the keyboard is 6 months and one month for the Magic Mouse.

i must have super battery's in my keyboard and magic mouse

my mac has been in sleep mode, most nights this week and charge levels are 100% for keyboard and 99% for mouse

I just got an iMac and I've been super curious as to how long the batteries last in the Magic Mouse. A month, eh?
