I recently came back from a big trip and am trying to import all of my photos. Unfortunately, I've had some hang ups in the importing process where there would be an error and the downloading would stop.

If I re-download or find a different way to get the photos into Apple Photos, will there be an alert if I'm going to import photos that I already have? I don't want to end up with hundreds of duplicates.

(Sorry - this should be in the Sonoma forum, but I'm not sure how to move it)

It depends on the way you do it. If you drag them just into the Photos App on a Mac you'll get that message:

If you click on share in the Finder and choose Photos it doesn't recognize duplicates.

Thanks, this is helpful. I went ahead and set up an album so I would know what was being imported and it Apple Photos will prompt you if you try to import a file that is already there
