I am new to this forum and besides my ipod, new to macs in general. If this question is already posted elsewhere, please let me know, I don't want to be annoying :)

I am looking to buy a macbook, but as I have seen with ipods, mac seems to come out with newer/updated versions of their products on a regular basis. I want to buy a macbook for myself this Christmas, but I am hesitant to do so, as there might be a newer, better one just around the corner!

Could someone let me know if there is some kind of timeline for releasing new products etc etc or just shed some light on the subject (when is the best time to buy)?? Thanks!

Howdy,

The buyers guide tab up there^^^ is a good place to start it tells how long a product has been in service and gives the average life cycle ect. Most (a lot at least) of us are waiting on the WWDC, (Aug-7th) for new (hopefully) product announcements. So if you haven't yet got a new mac, you may want to wait for just a few more days and see what comes of that. I am sure some of the more knowledgeable ones around here will chime in with better ideas than mine.

Hope it helps.

Im gonna guess that the MacBook and MacBookPro will see an update in September. So if you can hold off till then.

WWDC will be for the MacPro (PowerMac) and it will be a big event for the pro machines, Don't look for any consumer machines to be announced then, MacWorld expo Paris is usually when laptops get revised.

i would say now (summer time) because they have those great student discounts. actually got a $100 rebate check in the mail today from apple.

but i guess this only works if you are a student :p

The best time to buy, is always "next month". There is always a new release on the horizon.

The Macbook has just had a new facelift, so it will not change substantially for at about a year. However it will be upgaded to better processors as they come out. This could happen as soon as the Apple developers conference on the 7th August.

There were also a few teething problems with the plastic of the Macbooks. I think this has now been sorted out.

Thanks you guys!!!! I hope this wasn't a dumb topic! Your replies really helped! I'm going to see what happens in the next couple of months since I'm not planning to purchase until December, but now I know about WWDC etc... and all your information really helped me, I'm so uninformed on the subject !

The best advice is if you want it now and can afford it, go ahead. Because with all technology, something better is going to come out at some point, be it 2 weeks away, or 1 year. It happens.

You'll be a little ticked off, but it isn't worth worrying over so much. I just bought a new iMac last friday. If a newer, faster better one happens to be announced sometime soon, i'm cool with it. It isn't like this one is rendered absolutly obsolete or it will just explode on my desk because it is no longer the newest.

btw...no topic is dumb...sounding stuff of others is a good idea when making a purchase like this...
