I'm looking for something with the pure Android experience and timely updates. Anything new on the horizon?

I'm interested in this as well. I used a Galaxy Nexus for 2 weeks and it was a great phone. I currently have a 4S but I'm starting to get a bit bored of it. I'll either be getting the next iPhone or the next Nexus if the iPhone isn't something impressive because iOS 6 sure doesn't look like it is.

I remember reading a rumor of more than one Nexus coming out and from different phone manufacturers. I hope it's true. The more choices the better. I personally would go with either Samsung or Motorola if that is the case.

October or November. Probably made by Samsung.

I'd really like to see other manufacturers take a stab at it, but given Samsung's prowess, I wouldn't be surprised if Google went with them again. EDIT: Actually, the only other manufacturer I'd like to see do it is HTC again. I think Motorola and Sony designs are Hideous with a capital H. LG... eh, 50/50. And I wonder if Asus is in the running now...

More importantly though, I hope Google gets this launch right this time. It should be offered on their Play store just like the Nexus 7, and like the Galaxy Nexus now, fully unlocked and carrier free. And from day one. In my opinion, Google hasn't done a single Nexus smartphone launch correctly.

Also, side note: They really need to fix Jelly Bean's oddities and glitches, either with 4.1.2, or with Key Lime Pie.

I too wonder when the new Nexus phone is coming out. I am waiting for Apple to announce the iPhone 5 to see how it is before jumping into a Galaxy S3, but since the new Nexus seems to be upon release, I may wait for Google to unveil it too.

Samsung has been chosen for the upcoming new Galaxy Nexus.

http://goo.gl/jeAdk

Also... presently Verizon is offering the excellent (current model) Galaxy Nexus for only $99.00 which is a terrific price.

I bought an unlocked one from Google, it's terrific I really like it.

I've had over twenty Androids, all top of the line from Samsung or HTC, and other than the obvious advantages, this slightly curved Nexus is the best so far.

Ixodes, have you had a Galaxy S3? I was looking at getting the Galaxy Nexus because I could get it for under $400 after shipping and taxes, which is still better than the $600 I'd have to fork over for an S3. Now, I've not yet seen a Nexus in person, but I've played around a little with an S3, and I love the screen. The Touchwiz interface is a little garish, but not at all unpleasant.

So, I was wondering: Would you really recommend the benefit of Jelly Bean over the sheer power and expandability of the S3? Is the S3 potentially 50% better (after the inevitable Jellybean update) a phone for 50% greater cost (right now)? Or does the difference in price far outweigh the marginally improved performance and the handy (but not impossible to work around) microSD slot? I suppose greater battery capacity and slightly improved display could be mentioned as well, but those are really minor touches, I figure.

For the record, I'm coming from a Nokia E71, my trusty old warhorse, and one of the finest S60 devices ever made. After begrudgingly drinking the Cult of Steve Jobs koolaid and getting an rMBP, I thought I might even be up for the new iPhone but the mere realization that it doesn't have a 720p display put me right off.

I remember when the "Nexus Prime" was rumored to be the mother of all phones, and then they put 4yr old TI components in it. That was like someone flipping the lights on in the club to realize you've been grinding on a sea donkey for the last half hour.

Screen on the nexus is pretty similar to the s3. Pretty much identical just a tad smaller. You can't notice the pentile unless you put your face really close. The nexus on jellybean performs amazingly as well. Very fast and butter smooth.

The TI omap isn't old. It actually at the time offered the best balance of performance and battery life and has many features built into the chipset that other chips lacked. It also supports lte, HSDPA+, t mobile aws bands, and pretty much any gsm carrier as well as CDMA. It also had dedicated video chips for playback and is completely open source. Ask any dev which chip they like to develop for most. They will most likely say the omap. The a5 GPU is only fast because its huge. Its very power hungry and the a5 is nearly twice the size of the tegra 3 and the a5x is more than twice the size. The a5 is bigger than a sandy bridge dual core and the a5x is bigger than a sandy bridge quad. Look at how big the iPad 3 battery is.

That's exactly how they did the Nexus One launch. It only sold decent volume when it was available from carriers, the Google store, unlocked and carrier free version never really gained traction.

Yeah. The 350 dollar galaxy nexus has done pretty well though. I know a few people who have picked one up. I have the Verizon one though. I am surprised t mobile hasn't tried make some kind of deal on the unlocked one. They'd have a massive win on their hands if they sold the GSM version as is on contract. T mobile would barely have to subsidize it since its so cheap.

I've heard that Key Lime Pie isn't rumored until next year. Google themselves said the updates would get less frequent and Jelly Bean launched not long ago. New Nexus devices always debut with a new android flavor.

I think it is like the sasquatch but for the sea... verrrry elusive!!!

I had to grin when I read that too!

Haha, I forgot that UrbanDictionary is my friend:

Sea donkey:
A human female resemblant of a sea cow (aka. manatee), but with a face far less smooth or attractive, being more like that of a donkey.

Haha. That's unkind to donkeys though. They are great pack animals and little donkey foals are very cute, ranking up there with fuzzy little goat kids. Ah... I must go and look at picture of animals now.

That's true. The only difference is they didn't seem to push the Nexus branding as much as they did the Nexus 7. Hopefully that'll change with this year's Nexus smartphone.

Hoping they keep it reasonably priced too.

Didn't change the fact that that and the lack of an SD card slot, and the camera was like a kick in the nuts.

Do you think it will release with the next version of Android?

And what do you think this new version will bring?

Software wise, I personally think at most, we'll get a 4.2 update called Key Lime Pie.

At least, a 4.1.2 update (which I actually hope comes sooner because J.B. has issues).

I can't imagine a 5.0 Key Lime Pie so close to JB.

I bought a new Galaxy S domestic market GSM model from Hong Kong when they were first released. That was the start of the Galaxy series and a pretty good phone for Samsungs first serious effort at building a quality smartphone.

Next, when the S2 was released I bought one of those. It was even better, and noticeably faster.

Then upon release I bought a Galaxy S III which I'm using concurrently along with the Nexus and a HTC One X. I've been a mobile phone enthusiast for a long time, have always maintained a few lines just for the fun it, and currently find the Galaxy's an excellent choice for me.

The 4.65" display on the Nexus, the 4.7" on the One X, and the 4.8" on the S III are all in the "sweet spot" that allow me to type very fast when composing and responding to the many emails I get each day. I prefer to use the landscape mode, and that's where my iPhone 4S really falls flat. With half the display taken up by the keyboard, and the title bar at the top, there's nearly no room to work. These three Androids on the other hand, are a sheer joy to use in landscape mode.

The other superior advantage offered by Samsung is the SWYPE keyboard. If you've never tried it, you will be nicely surprised at how intuitive it is, how easy, fast and accurate it is to write emails, notes and the like.

While the HTC One X is a very nice model and far better than any HTC previously, the Galaxy S III or the Nexus are the two favorites of mine.

That said, for you I might suggest the S III for you. It has some additional features over the Nexus, a larger display on a phone that's nearly the same size as the Nexus, and best of all, has incredible battery life.

The version of Android on the S III is just as fast as the most current rev of Jelly Bean I'm running on my Nexus. So that's not a deal breaker. If anything I actually prefer the build that comes standard on the S III.

Given how few 4.X devices there are out there, I'm sure Google will go up to 4.3 or 4.4 before going for the big 5.0 in late 2013 or early 2014.

I'm starting to think that you're an addict when it comes to your gadgets :p

I remember reading you have every Mac as well?

Yes I am. I don't drink, smoke, or have other vices.

I'm just a huge mobile computing and communications addict

Smartphones by most all manufacturers, Laptops mainly by Apple, Sony, and ThinkPads by Lenovo, are the objects of my tech addiction.

I've got a new ThinkPad X1 Carbon on the way next.. that ought to be fun. :)

Thanks for your excellent and thorough review of your Android history and advice. I suppose I just have to think about whether I want to wait to see if the announcement of the new iPhone will push down Galaxy S3 prices substantially or if I just want to get a new phone now. Decisions, decisions...

ETA: Is there any reason I should desperately avoid buying an unlocked AT&T or T-Mobile Galaxy S3 and opt for a fresh-from-the-factory, never carrier locked model instead? Am I saddled with carrier crapware forever with those (bar going down the road of re-flashing firmware and all that jazz)?

ETA2: Oh shoot, I don't want to be LTE model, since I'd mostly be using the phone in the UK, where LTE isn't really around yet, but I do need full EU quad-band capability. I guess it's the proper International GSM model for me...
