When is the best time to buy an iMac?

A lot of people's opinions (and mine) are if you need a computer now, get one now. The new iMacs are incredible machines and will satisfy for years to come. Sure, you can wait until they come out with new and improved ones, but you can end up waiting forever for the "right" one. The current iMac isn't incredibly old, I'd say it will be Spring before they come out with a new one.

Here are all the options:

1. When you can afford it.
2. When you need it.
3. Right after an announcement.
4. Three months after an announcement: allows some time to shake out problems and some time before a new model appears.

My preference is 1+2.

I just picked up my imac 24" before Christmas and could not be more happier!!! I did have my fingers crossed thru macworld but all is well!

After staring at my big bright 24" iMac for almost a month now in awe, I don't know what they could possibly ever do to this thing to make me like it even more (except knock $1000 off the price :D )

I would wait about a month, as we'll likely find out when Leopard is releasing by then. Then, if you decide you can wait for the Leopard release, I'd do that. As then, if there is a small update, it'll likely be around Leopard's release as they'll be loading a new OS anyways. If not, then atleast you get Leopard for free. If in a month we find out Leopard is still 6+ months away, you might as well buy it now.

I, personally, am waiting for the start of summer for the iPod promotion. Hopefully by then, Leopard will be preloaded, they'll be a speed bump, and I'll get both a free iPod and printer. But if I wait that long, I may as well wait for the Conference in August... :p

The fact that they had nothing released this Macworld means the next update must be huge.

I disagree. The fact that nothing else besides the iPhone and Apple TV were released doesn't mean much. All it means is that Steve was so excited about the iPhone that he decided to dedicate all of Macworld to it.

The current iMac range is the best you can expect (other that video card (etc) updates) until the Intel Santa Rosa Merom platform is released. So if you want 1 now buy 1 now.

Or they are just waiting for the Santa Rosa mobile chipset from Intel to come out and then they will bump us the memory bus speed and the increas max memory to 4GB (2s2GB). Perhaps add another 0.133GH onto the clock speed...

If they switch away from using mobile parts then a redesign would be necessary. But I tink Apple are in love with slim, cool, and quiet.

That would be some time after after April.

After having a DEll in my house *I* am in love with slim, cool, and quiet!

My iMac has made a computer lover out of me again!
