With more models being released, and older models remaining viable for longer, I’m curious to see what your buying patterns are like.

In my case, I started using an iPhone with the 4S, and grabbed it brand new shortly after the 5 was released because LTE plans were still not financially worth it then.

I then upgraded to a 5C just as the 6 was announced solely to get on the LTE bandwagon. After that was a 6S right as the 7 was unveiled, and then an 8+ as a hand-me-down when a family member got an XR.

When on a yearly upgrade program, paying monthly, I always lease the latest top line phone. Other than taxes and the carrier set up charge the cost monthly stays the same.

As a general rule, I think people should get the newest, fastest they can afford. Then you will be able to take advantage of the updates for a long as possible.

That depends how long they are planning to keep the device. If they are only keeping it for two years, then they can get a previous years model and not see any issues. They also save a decent amount of money too. I bought the 6S and 8 Plus the years after they were released and never regretted it. This year I bought an iPhone 12 which is the first new iPhone I’ve bought since the iPhone 6. Phones last much longer than they used to in terms of hardware capabilities so now more than ever is a good time for people to buy older devices to avoid higher costs. Just look at the XR/11 for reference.
