When opera gets declined apple will try use some of the new features.

Though hopefully it won't be declined.

only

time will tell my guess is it's going to be a while before Opera is either accepted or rejected! With Apples history of course leaning towards the latter!

I doubt Opera's developers are going to take the chance of being sued for "enticing others to jailbreak" or whatever.

If Opera gets declined for "duplicating functionality" then I can see Opera Software reporting it to the EU Competition Commission. It wouldn't be the first time, and personally I'm kind of looking forward to it.

What is the EU gonna do? Apple has nowhere near a monopoly on anything.

I freely admit that I'm not familiar with EU laws, but I was under the impression that anti-competitive behaviour is illegal regardless of whether there's a monopoly involved.

I don't see why it wouldn't be.

And while I highly doubt that it will be approved I still am holding out that it will. I would like to try it out and no way am I JBing again. I'm kinda hoping that Apple is getting sick of all this negative attention for being so nazi and controlling. Opera really was smart to try to get lots of attention and anticipation building about their app before they submitted it. That way if (or when) it gets denied they have a much larger voice of anger. Can apple really afford that right now? I think they realize they are losing iphone owners already....

No, do some reading on EU Competition Law. There is specific wording about dominance in a market.

I guess I’m in the minority, but I think Apple will approve Opera because it’s their server-side compression Web browser instead of the mobile version that does full rendering (Mini vs. Mobile).

With all the publicity Opera's been getting, it would look pretty bad on Apple to reject it.

Oh wait, this is Steve Jobs we're talking about.

I am not going to get hopes up, but it will very likely get rejected. I don't see it being pitted against mobile Safari. After all, Apple is trying to gain marketshare for Safari, not put in competition for it.

If it does get approved, it will mean Apple will have some catching up to do and some freaking house cleaning on the code behind Safari.

A major under the hood overhaul of the iPhone OS is severely needed.

I like it but the only thing that sucks is theres no multitouch available on any opera mini iphone browsers.
If I cant zoom in and out or copy and select text or pictures then its not worth it IMO.
It would be good to have if you're stuck on edge or with slow internet speeds to make internet browing faster though.

I really think that Apple will consider this kind of browser to be a crummy substitute for what Safari offers and they won't see it as a threat.

I think they WILL approve it.

I'm basing that on nothing but my intuition. We'll have to wait and see who's right!

My thoughts exactly. Last time I used Opera, let alone Opera Mini, the best thing I could say about it was that it was a browser. It's not even in the same league as Safari so I don't see why Apple wouldn't approve it. On the other hand, if they don't approve it, who's going to care? A handful of geeks on a couple web sites that threaten to get android phones every time the wind blows from the east? What's Apple care? I'd say it's 50/50.
