When refurb is updated + applecare for imac?

I'll be buying an imac in a few days. I already have a macbook which I bought refurbished and I was happy with it.

My questions:

1) Do refurbished imacs have the same standard quality of refurbished apple laptops?

2) When is the refurbished section updated each week? I think it used to be tuesday, thursday, and Saturday (at least here in Canada). Is it still the same?

3) I bought applecare with my macbook. I also bought additional warranty with my previous laptops. Would never go without it for a laptop. But it's been such a long time since I had a desktop, and the one I had was custom built from a China town store (which means cheap + no warranty). Should I get applecare for my imac? Is it necessary? Are desktop (i.e. imac) HDDs and the imac screen prone to the same failures as laptop HDDs and screens?

Yes, some argue they have even better as they are checked in person in the U.S. No matter what you buy, some models have problems, but there is no stats that say which is better, they seem to be about the same.

It varies, depending on how quick they run out. Check it as frequently as you can.

Desktops tend to not have as many issues, but there are plenty with iMacs that have had to have things replaced. I don't consider it a must, but Logic Board failures are not fun.

i bought a refurb imac g5 20 inch 3.5 years ago. Still using it till this day with no problems. never had to use applecare which has since expired.

Only thing i've done is add ram

refurb doesnt mean anything, your still buying a quality made computer from apple

Another question: can you get an education discount on top of a refurb? Or is the price of refurb the same?

There is not an EDU discount per say, rather it is a EDU price meaning that you purchase it at that said price as opposed to getting a flat x percent off. So in short, no. There is no further discounted price.

I would get the extended warranty. Both my iMacs needed service and both time it was very expensive. First one needed a new motherboard and my latest one broke down after 16 months where the back lighting of the monitor failed. It is currently in a box in my closet since £1000 to repair a £1400 computer is not sound

well, i'm going to wait on the applecare actually. It comes with a 1 year warranty, right? And my credit card adds another year to it. So I should be good for at least 2 years, but I might still purchase applecare at the end of 1st year, though i suspect if there are any problems to be had, they'll show up in the 1st two years.

In the UK. On the further education (college) discount, you tend to be able to get a brand new one for the same price as a refurb.
