When should I buy my new MBP

Hi, I am a PC user who has decided to buy a new MBP. I am moving to America to study for a year and so will be purchasing off the American Apple Store with my Student Discount. I will be arriving in America on the 19th September. I plan to get my Mac ASAP and was wondering how long it takes to arrive after my order date. Also, do you reckon that it will be worth it for me to wait until Leopard is released. I will have a Windows laptop with me so won't be without a computer if I do decide to wait, but I am just unsure.

Can someone please help with this.

if you think it's worth saving $75 to wait a month, get the macbook pro after leopard is released. if you're willing to shell out $75 for leopard by getting the macbook pro early or if you're perfectly content with tiger, get it when you arrive.
 
To be honest, as long as you're okay with buying Leopard when it comes out, now is an excellent time. The new MBPs have been updated recently, but there's been about a two month time frame where any bugs can be worked out with the revamped machines. I doubt the MBPs will see another update any time soon. If you're content with paying $129 for Leopard, go for it. Tiger is an excellent release and the MBPs are excellent machines.
 
If you need it now, it's a perfect time. Leopard will be out soon, but I would wait for them to get the bugs out before purchasing. Tiger, in the meantime, is a great OS. It's not as flashy as Leopard, but that's not what an OS is about, is it?
 
Leopard will be much, much better than Tiger. It'll be worth holding out another month to get it free, pre-installed on your new MBP.
 
I would get the macbook now, because of the fact that there will be a decent amount of time until they refresh it, from the fact the recent revision is still very new. Paying for the os shouldn't be that much of a deal afterwards, and there could be some possible issues (hopefully now) with Leopard. Just a though...
 
Waiting For Your Macbook Pro

Well, like everyone said, if you don't mind waiting for Leopard then you will save $75.

BUT BUT BUT ...

Apple currently have a back log of orders for MACBOOK PROS dating back to May07, so if you order one today don't expect it to arrive for a long time

I currently have one on order and have been waiting since the 31/07/07

Coming up to 2 months wait for me now!

Thought thats if you order it directly from Apple. I got my from Best Buy, with no delay. There are also other dealers that may have different shipping times, though I haven't checked on that (like Amazon).
 
Two months wait..? That's ridiculous... I ordered mine fourteen days ago, shipped after four days and received another six days after that.

And enjoying it. :D
 
Having worked for Sony for 5 years, my concern is more of a long-term one. It's all fine and well that you'll be stateside for a year, but after that, should your computer require service, if you're not in the country of origin (that is, American models are in America, Japanese models are in Japan, etc.) will this represent a service issue?

I don't know that it will, but I won't guarantee that it won't. I would contact Apple tech support and ask first before doing this.

I know with Sony (yes, a totally different company than Apple) if you bought an American model computer, you would have to ship it into the U.S. for service, and when we'd ship it back to you it would have to be wiped because the OS contained parts which utilized encryption, and American law largely forbids any kind of encrypted data LEAVING it's borders. Also, you're having to pay international shipping to get the unit into the country.

Weigh these factors and, again, ask Apple if they might apply in your case.

Dont wait for Leopard. I know its going to be awesome, but I always feel better when I have the install discs for the previous OS in my possession. Incase Leopard backfires (though it wont), you will have the Tiger install discs. Then, when you want to buy Leopard, just use your Student Discount.

Can someone give me some info. on this? I am now quite wary of buying it and then not having full support when I return to the UK.

I think I may get it ASAP. Although I have just found out from my uni accomodation that I can't get any orders delivered until I get there so I will have to order on around the 19th. Could anyone give me a clue as to how long it will take to get to me? Also, if I order it before Leopard is released and it ships after Leopard is released, will it come with Leopard or Tiger installed :confused:


Sorry for all of the questions...Bet you can really tell how much of a Mac newb I am :eek:
 
Hey dude.. apple's got worldwide service so no problems regarding the support u need.. and if you have already flown into US then u as well go to a brick and mortar store for ur mac.. there's a good chance that u can get it then and there instead of waiting for it..Go for it!!! but u'd beter call up the store and confirm if they've got stock before u proceed.. and also try best buy.. they also seem to have em.

I would buy it around mid November time. Which is when i am planing on getting mine as well. Before you buy it you should explain your situation ie your 'from UK and only going to live in america for a year' first and they will be able to help you I know since my cousin recentley moved to brussles from UK told apple about his situation and they gave him the right plug with no trouble at all. In my opinion you should buy MCP from the UK store since your only living there for a year and you can use a travel plug. Thats what i would do anyway.

Excellent news about the worldwide service :)

I would get it direct from a store but I get $200 off from apple store as I'm a student :cool: I Guess I could put up with a Windows laptop for a couple of months if I had to.

I would get it from the UK but if you look at the price comparison between the UK and US Apple stores, you can see that the US is a LOT cheaper, plus I get my student discount.

Can anyone give me any information on whether Leopard will be installed on my machine if I ordered it before it was released but it was shipped after the realese. :confused:

Nope.. i guess u might get a coupon for a free upgrade or at a minimal cost.. But accordin to me .. go for it now.. wait until the bugs are cleared out of leopard (HOPEFULLY MINIMUM) and then go for it, cause tiger is supposed to be a very mature os.. get used to it , then jump the ship..:D
 
Right, I think I will order it as soon as I get to the States. One final question though...Can I use my student discount at normal Apple Stores or is it only applicable online? Because if it isn't then I can forget about waiting two months for delivery and just go and pick one up :D

Just present your Student ID or Letter of Acceptance from the university and you will get your student discount in-store just same as on-line.

When do you all think there is going to be a design revamp? I want to buy a Macbook but, I'm going to wait until Leopard. Is it worth it to wait longer? After all, there hasn't been a new design for 1½ years now. The design before that only lasted for a year right?

hmm its rumored for late october.. most likely on the last day of oct... and yea.. presenting ur student id will do.. but DO call before heading to the store.. find out if they have stock and if they do ask them to hold on to one..

Hi.
You can use it online and in the shops as far as i know. If you order online you have to go to the apple education site first enter the uni and state then fill out the rest after checkout. I can also get a student discount which is why i am planing on buying the 17" with 260gbHD! which means i will only spend £2k compared to £2,400 odd. I wouldn't buy an american one since i am going to be in UK for around 5 more yrs. then it's difficult buying in america because there are loads of other import charges and tax after you buy it.

Hi!

I bought my MBP in February in the USA, and this summer I went back to Norway. I had noticed a lot of dead pixels, so I took it to an Apple authorized reseller (no Apple Store in Norway) and I had the repair guy take a look at it. He said it would definitely be covered by warranty, and that I could hand in my computer right away and I'd have it back in a week. And now it's back to perfect :)

I guess Apple's products uses very standardized parts so they're maybe the same all over the world. However it's VERY important to get AppleCare ifyou buy it abroad. That covers repairs all over the world if I understand it correctly. It also protects you against the ****** (and pretty much non-existing) consumer laws in the US. (At least compared to Europe)

So definitely buy it in the US, with the ridiculous exchange rate on the US dollar it's quite a bargain paying with foreign money!

Edit: As for the plug: Just buy a small US to UK travel adapter for when you go back home. Or go to your uk online store and buy a separate power adapter. It's a bit expensive, but by buying the whole MBP in the US you'll save even more.
