I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max; perfect shape, not a mark on it, running iOS17, a museum piece. Works great. I have battery set to Optimized Battery Charging and Auto Lock to two minutes. Battery Max Capacity is at 92%. When should I get a new battery?

My museum piece 11 Pro Max (which is my primary phone) battery is at 99%.

If you're going to go to Apple you're going to need to wait until your battery hits 79% before they will replace the battery.

I was using an iPhone 11 Pro Max and I was happy with it. About six months ago I dropped a bottle of olive oil on the screen while following a recipe. So I had a new screen put on it. Then about a month ago I got a warning that my battery needed serviced. It had 70 some percent life in it. It wasn’t last through the day. So I bought a new 15 Pro Max. I’m going to have a battery put in it. I always keep my last phone as a back up in case something happen to my current phone.

Do you mean before they will pay for the battery replacement or do it period? I have a 14 at 91% and I want a new battery and am willing to pay for it. Are you saying they wont replace it?

They will refuse to replace your battery if the health is 80% or above. Your willingness to pay doesn't matter to them.

That way they can force people like me to buy a new damn phone I guess if I’m not satisfied with a battery at 90% etc.

Well, they support the products they sell by selectively repairing or replacing when necessary. You're wanting an elective service which they do not offer. That's not what their techs are there for. So, yes. Selling you a new phone instead is exactly what they want.

What you want is appropriate to a third party repair shop.

Unless they changed it recently, that's not true. I handed down my 12 Mini and wanted to give it away with a fresh battery. it was at 89%ish and they changed it no problem. They did say it wasn't time, but I told them (official Apple store) the situation and they went ahead and did it. I paid full price, of course.

You're not forced to do anything of the sort.

They were being nice, probably because you provided an explanation as to why. But usually they do not do this.

That's strange, I did change the battery around 85% at an apple authorized service and paid out of pocket (where I live we only have Apple online store, no physical stores or genius bar).

It's just not cheap 🥲

Apple authorized service. But not Apple itself?

Not sure which country you are in but if you walk in to a third party repair store in the US with a brand new phone and ask them to replace the brand new battery and brand new screen they will do it. Because you are paying for it. But while the third party repair store can and could be an Authorized Apple Repair store, they are not actually Apple.

You walk in to an actual brick and mortar Apple store and you will be told no.

Yes, as mentioned previously, an Apple genius could choose to do that, but in general Apple does not.

There may be some middle ground with third party repair stores that are Apple Authorized repair stores such as Best Buy, but generally to make repairs on Apple devices those stores have to abide by Apple's rules.
