Hi All,

In general, i ma a business owner, and keen Apple enthusiast.

My needs for business, are easy, Running a few apps, for or in browser for Sciences and Biology and my consults and clinets.

I currently own the base Mac studio 1TB and the MacBooK pro M1 16gb.
i am on my laptop at my coffee table most of the time, and at y studio desk 30% of the time.

Herein lies the crux, clearly a MacBook air, or even an iPad would service my Business needs.

However we have branched out into new avenues, for one i am a passionate musician, hence the Mac Studio, and hesitant to jump to the new M3 as the high efficiency count means everything, a recent development, is the start of. a high end podcast for me, Video and audio.

I am a Cinematographer on retainer, who will do most of my work and set up, some i would like to do myself, currently i am familiar with Logic Pro X and the demands my plugs in take, and how many tracks are done, the only Macbook for me would be 16 core/40 Gpu 2Tb, as a configuration 96gb would already be overkill, although there are a few Max around with 128gb 16/core/40gpu around.

The 64 or the 128gb versions, have the 14 core / 30 gpu attached.

I am hovering between between being realistic and then again whats on off. Context we don't have an apple store, so any other configuration is a long wait.

MacBook M3 Max 16core/ 40 Gpu, 128gb Ram 4tb storage seems the only configuration available in stock. 4tb is fine, the chip is fine, 128gb seems ridiculous,

The next down, is 64gb with same chip, or 96 with the 14 core chip, in music High performance core are everything, with the introduction of high efficiency cores slowing me down.

Goal: 2024 Replace or keep my MacBook its doing fine for now or Replace the it now, and take the first financial hit, Take the 4Tb 128gb one, it lasts me 4-5 years.

Goal 2: with the Ultra not out yet, i will be getting the Mac studio Ultra 128gb 4TB with best chip. to handle all shooting needs. They not out yet, which gives me spacing on finances. at 46 the 14 inch is too small for my eyes. The Max Ultra i hope has the longer lifecycle.

With the introduction of logic pro x a year ago on Ipad, it was clearly to get the 3rd party plug ins on board, I am tempted to see the line up coming, and available ram and ports on offer, to be taken seriously, it needs a few things, i think finally this maybe addressed. I like have an iPad around, it controls, a lot of my gear, that doesn't have mac apps, and i will kit it out as a alternative to the MacBook.

Hey maybe it can be my mac book, and i can power more into the mac studio and my desk set up (Lighting to speakers etc)

For those in music, or into higher end Photography , (Sony FGX3 and they may introduce the FGX6 still a rumour.)

Where is it enough, and when does it become way too much, not even future proof ? I am not producing films here, but yes well edited content, from 10-15-90 min long, musically its a passion, and i build my own backing tracks for guitar and piano.

Regards,

From a humble user, with little tech savvy

Could you structure your query a bit better, my understanding the time being is that you want to rationalize the purchase of new gear with your current gear not being a real burden, simply out of perceived convenience. Which would make this the worst time to upgrade.

Also, you want to spend more money to "simplify" your ecosystem ? Unless you can deduct the expense from taxes and come ahead on the sale of the older items, the hassle does not seem to be worth your time.

Again, structure the query better please.

When to upgrade [note: Answer is based for American tax laws, consult a tax lawyer for more details]:

You should upgrade either:
- When you can no longer perform a tax write off with the current equipment OR;
- When the new equipment can perform work more efficiently then your existing equipment.

It seems like your existing equipment can no longer perform the tasks because your business is offering new services.

What specs to upgrade:

I don't know :( Sadly, your post is badly written, and I have no idea what you are trying to do with your machines. I suppose a question becomes:

1. What exactly will you use the machine for?
2. Is portability a requirement?
3. What are the minimum storage needed? If you don't know, what type of video will you shoot, the specs, and the length (i.e. 4K Raw video for 30 minutes).
4. What type of storage will you need? Will the storage be off loaded to an external drive?
