I have a USB 3 hub. Is there any advantage or disadvantage to getting a cable to plug it in to the USB-C ports on the 2017 iMac, vs using the cable I have to plug it into the normal USB ports? Are these ports functionally the same other than the connector they use (ignoring Thunderbolt 3)?

I was curious about this today - the regular USB-A ports, are USB 3.0 (now also known as USB 3.1 Gen 1), and the USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports support USB 3.1 Gen 2.

USB 3.0/USB 3.1 Gen 1 does up to 5gb/s
USB 3.1 Gen 2 does up to 10gb/s

Unless you've got a USB 3.1 Gen 2 supported device, just use the regular USB-A ports.
