Sorry if the post title is confusing.

And sorry to be lazy. I've poked around but can't find anything definitive. I'm not looking for the actual dates - those are pretty easy to find (e.g. the preview was March 17 in 2009 for OS 3.0)

I'm wondering how long before the given date we heard the first solid rumors?

Trying to figure out when i should be worried if we haven't heard anything about an OS preview before the iPad ships :)

I'm going to predict that we won't hear anything about OS 4.0 until after the iPad goes on sale.

Why should you be worried? And iPhone 4.0 isn't shipping with iPad on April 3 regardless -- developers need to have it for a bit so they can tweak their apps.

You are making the assumption that developers can put their apps on the store on day one. These apps need to be tested on the real hardware before sending it on to Apple. I'm expecting at least a week, if not more, before Apple will start accepting iPad apps. If I'm right about the delay then there is no reason it couldn't be OS 4.0 as long as its ready to go.

Why are they related? iPad will ship with 3.2, it'll get v4 like everything else in the summer.

I'd be "worried" because I think it's fairly clear at this point that we don't yet know everything about 3.2 (I assume you guys have seen the screen caps showing the 'My Documents' and 'Open In' buttons? - My take is that that stuff is the tip of the iceberg of what we don't know...)

So I'd prefer for there to be some type of definitive, full description - preview style, with all the supporting documentation - of all the capabilities prior to asking people for orders.

Not that I won't be ordering my 64GB + 3G no matter what :)

there were iphone apps on the app store a week before the 2.0/iphone 3g came out.

And there were iPod Touches and 1st gen iPhones to test these apps on in the months leading up to that. There are no iPads to test iPad-only apps on until April 3.

Responding to oneeach, there is no way OS 4.0 will be ready to go until the summer.

Unfortunately it's looking like no March event this year... I expect WWDC will be largely 4.0 oriented though, which will be available on iPhone/iPod touch/iPad. Just my guess! :D

Assuming OS 4.0 will be targeted for a summer release along with a new iPhone, they would still need to announce it relatively soon so that developers have a couple months to take advantage of any new features.

This is what I was also wondering about in a roundabout way - is the timing of the iPad (both pre-order and shipping) somehow impacting the timing of the 4.0 preview?

And since we don't yet know 'everything' about 3.2, will a mid/late March combo-preview of 3.2 and 4.0 be in the cards?

I would guess that the fact that a lot of people are probably working hard on finishing OS 3.2 is impacting when we get to see OS 4.0. We've already seen a preview of OS 3.2 though, there's no need to do that again even if they didn't spell out every single feature.
