hey everyone. I was just wondering, what is the about date that Mac OS X.3 will be released? this summer, or what? I was wondering, b/c this summer, when i get a job, i'm gonna get me an iBook, and I was just wondering what ya'lls estimate was when it would be made. Thanks, and i'll talk to you guys later.

It will be released when it's ready. Since we haven't heard any information about betas of it going out yet, expect late Summer at the earliest.

do you think that 10.3 will be anywhere as major as 10.2? Im guessing not but i can always dream (not about the price though)

Id say around July or something.

thanks

Thanks alot guys and gals. Another few questions, though. How much would it cost to upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3? And, will new iBooks be released by then (w/ new case)? and, where are the new iPods? Are they gonna release them at the next MW? or what? speaking of it, when/where is the next Macworld? Thanks for ya'lls replies.

How much? That is a complex question.

If one is upgrading from some version of Mac OS before 10.2, expect to pat as much as 10.2/Jaguar cost.

If one has Jaguar, there might be upgrade versions available (like 10.1 had) for anywhere between $20 and (at a guess) $75.

$20 would be considered a free upgrade as that is what it would cost Apple to package and ship the upgrade.

[All prices above in US dollars of course.]

Unless there are some major improvements i think having to pay (not just P&P) for it would really be a bummer .

There will be enhancements to it. The quesiton is how many will there be? And of what value will they be to you?

You could always think of paying for Mac OS upgrades as a way for Apple to continue offering upgrades to most iApps for free download.

I think it is too early to say when 10.3 will be released, once we start seeing builds, and seeing how finished they seem, you can start estimating, but Apple hasn't made a mention of it yet, so I don't think that we should start speculating on it. Once the first build is leaked, then speculation will be rampant enough.

powermacs are usually updated in late summer but ibooks may be on a different schedule. 10.1 was released in september and 10.2 was released in august, so late summer is probably a rough estimate of when it will be released. 10.3 will almost undoubtedly be a paid upgrade (the 10>10.1 upgrade was only free because 10 was not really a complete os). jaguar is $129 but $69 for students and $59 for government purposes so 10.3 will probably be in that ballpark. what i'd say about timing your purchase is, wait until 10.3 is released and then look at how long the ibooks have gone without an update (it's usually in 6 month cycles). if 10.3 is released and the ibooks have only been out for 2 months, buy an ibook and if it does not have 10.3, you get it for free with the up-to-date program. if 10.3 is released and the ibooks have not been upgraded in 5-6 months, just wait.
