I can't get my iPad to reliably play movies and tv shows that are in my iTunes library through home sharing. I get a 'timed out' statement, or, if the program starts it will only play for a few seconds. It seems as if the entire program needs to download to the iPad before it will play - but I can't say that I've had the patience to actually try that...I just get the 'Request Timed Out". It was a great system before 11.0...

Home sharing has always worked without any problems on my three Apple TVs, 3rd, 4th and a 4K. However, I cannot remember the last time it worked well on my iPad and iPhone. I was wondering if Apple are ever planning to fix it or if they are just going to have to admit that it is useless and remove the feature.

How are you doing it?
IMHO, if you play it on iPad video app and then share to aTV, you send your media over air twice (iTunes->iPad->aTV).
If your movie is stored on iPad, then only once (iPad->aTV).
If you take the iTunes remote app, select your iTunes library on the machine that hosts it, and then airplay to aTV, then iPad is not in the pipeline and the movie streams from iTunes computer directly to aTV (iTunes->aTV).
