Does anyone know if AT&T is even working on allowing tethering on the iPhone. I really need it and if they do not get it soon, I will have to dump my iPhone because I need it for business and my company will even pay for it, however the fact that AT&T doesn't offer it sucks. We have plenty of BlueBerry's where tethering on AT&T works fine, but I really don't want to go the BB route, uh huh no way...

We've heard nothing.

This is why I'm still on 3.0.1, since you can easily hack the carrier file and have tethering. Besides, 3.1 and above have nothing that makes me want to update.

Or you can jailbreak.

I honestly don't think they ever will. And if they do, it won't be FREE. I would like for iPhone users to be able to use their unlimited data plan any damn way they want.

Basically, I guess I'm a proponent of a tiered data plan; but offer tethering because it would just count toward your data plan.

Maybe :
Unlimited data : $60
2GB/Month Data : $30
512MB/Month Data : $15
256MB/Month Data : $10

Allow tethering on all levels, no extra charge. If you blow through your data plan, then you have to pay per MB, that would be your problem to make sure your data plan fits your needs.

My son's Phone, through the family plan on AT&T, gets unlimited data for $10/month. Sure he doesn't use nearly as much as an iPhone does, but without it we were paying $30/month for his data usages.

On that note, the family plans should be double the costs for the double data configurations. This means that if you have 2 iPhones, the unlimited data would be $120. (4GB/month for 2 iPhones for $60) BUT if you have 3 iPhone, or even 4 iPhones, the unlimited data would still be $120. Another option could be to price them at 1/2 the price of the previous data plan. 1 iPhone = $60; 2 iPhones = $60 + $30, 3 iPhones = $60 + $30 + $15, etc...

Whatever they do, adjust the data plans, and GIVE US TETHERING!

Like I said I don't care if I had to pay for it, because I can expense it and I am surely not using even 1GB per month so I would think doing some sort of Scaled Data plan would work out fine for me.

I think that we'll get tethering when AT&T changes the iPhone plans to tiered data plans.

The problem is, they can't seem to decide what they want to do about that. They keep going back and forth and can't commit to anything. So it may be months or even another 2 years before they figure something out. Or it could be in a few weeks when the iPad launches. I really have no idea, but I think that's what they're waiting for.

I think they are not introducing tiered data packages because a large number of their customers would realize that they only need a bare minimum data plan....

They rather have everybody pay the $30.- per month :)

This is absolutely true. ATT CEO said the other day that it tiered plans were inevitable, which implies he's kind of reluctant.

Same here. 3.0.1 FTW. Although rumor has it BENM is back at working on tethering with the new updates. I would update then.

iPhone file transfer

I do not need tethering. Seems to me that if any Email attachment file could be transfered via usb or wifi from iPhone to Mac or PC, there would be no need for tethering for me.
