When will iPad backup be fixed?

I've read countless threads from people taking hours and hours to backup their iPads through iTunes. Doesn't seem to be limited to Windows users, as I've read Mac OS users reporting the same problem. Many people backup fine, many don't. From reading the posts some people fixed it by removing a USB hub, others disabled their anti virus, and many others found an offending app that was causing the slowdown.

Even at 64GB, it shouldn't take 12 hours to backup an iPad. Something is wrong, and I just can't seem to find a good answer or fix or even acknowledgment from Apple that this is even a problem.

Does anyone else think this is a big problem? I've left feedback at Apple.com but am not holding my breath. It seems preventing jailbreaking is more worthy than fixing a critical backup function... :mad:
 
my 32 has been backing up for 2 hours now and if the status bar is any indication I have 9 more hours for it to be done.
THIS IS RIDICULOUS APPLE!!!!!! This is so annoying. Its like its broken.
 
I had the same problem initially.

My first two or three backups that I did took at least 4 hours. I then did the next few backups during the night and they were complete when I woke up.

This week, I have for the first time since I experienced the long backups tried the backup again in the evening and the last two times it has only taken 30-40 minutes each time. I have not removed anything or changed any settings so I am not sure why it has changed or if it is only the first few backups that take that long.

I agree backups taking hours is a pain and if this problem continues something needs to be done about it. I also sent feedback to Apple and others who experience this issue should also do the same. The more feedback the better and the chances of them looking into it.
 
My solution was to disable all the network conections and after that the sync and the backup for my iphone and my Ipad it's pretty fast. When i'm done just turn on the network conections again.

So how is Apple going to fix? I've had zero problems. But if I did, I would certainly try to find the offending process causing the hang. Most Mac users don't use Virus protection, but I would start there. I would also ensure to update any weird USB configurations or drivers. When we sync we are usually doing MB when we BU we are pushing GB.
 
Mine took hours too, and then I got rid of the Zinio app and I haven't had any problems ever since.
 
Apps storing too much data is not the answer. Even if an app stored 63gb of crap, it doesn't take 12 hours to copy 64gb of data off a USB device. And since most of the stuff on my iPad is music and movies (which are not backed up), that number is more like 1-2gb. 12 hours is CRAZY.

There has got to be some sort of conflict or error condition, and since Apple has this thing locked down and everything is under the covers, the are the ones responsible for either fixing or providing a viable troubleshooting app or work around. Sure, we can tinker around with anti virus or network connections to see if we find something that works, but this problem is pretty wide spread and as most iPad problems seems to be ignored and swept under the rug at Apple support.

I don't think it's related to the amount of data. It is likely some app that is causing an error condition or something in your computer config. It's hard to pinpoint since some people fix it by deleting an app, others fix it by disabling their anti virus.

I read someone who blamed Goodreader, NPR, and USA Today. If I have a day to burn I may restore my iPad and reinstall every app one by one to see if I find the culprit.

I live and die by Goodreader these days. I love that app... :cool:
 
I'm going to try the turning off network/antivirus approach today after work. Do I just need to unplug my usb network adapter and turn off a/v through Control Panel (in Windows)? Should I even disable firewall and everything I can (would it help?)?

Do you have Comic Zeal? Some blame that app and the bulk of your comics in there. If not then I think it's the data you have in Good Reader.
 
I think part of it is because whatever sync algorithm Apple is using doesn't appear to check to see if the data needs to be synced.

I bought an episode of Mythbusters from the iTunes app on my iPad. A 500 meg video file.

The next time I synced up with my Mac, the sync went like this:

Step 1: sync all new purchases from iPad to Mac. 500 meg video file copied from iPad to Mac media library. Took about 10 seconds.

Step 2: iTunes "Purchased on iPad" playlist updated to include new video.

Step 3: sync iTunes playlists from Mac to iPad, including TV shows. 500 meg video file copied from Mac RIGHT BACK to iPad. Another 10 seconds.

Same happens with apps. Synced from iPad to Mac, then again from Mac back to iPad, in the same sync cycle.

Now for me that was just ONE show, I can't imagine 64 megs worth of shows, movies, music, apps...
 
Remove all apps musics photos etc and restore, it should retore very fast, add music and restore, if it restores fast that indicates its not a corrupt music file


Repeat with photos and books, if it all works well and restores fast, than start loading 5 apps at a time , i followed this procedure and found that zinio file as corrupt.


I have a ton music and video files, since removing the corrupt app i backup in ten mins or less.

That is what I am hoping.
 
Have you ever let it finish its backup completely?

Backups used to take a long time for me, and I would always cancel 30 minutes into the process.

The very first time I let the back up finish completely also happened to be the very last time a backup took more than 2 or 3 minutes.

I have all three of these apps and my backups usually take 10 - 30 seconds on an iPad 64GB.

My backups take 5 minutes tops. It's your computer.
 
It IS the device, not your PC/Mac

I have a iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 & a iPad 16gb.

The old iPhone 3G is kind of slow if it has been a long time since a sync, but worst it ever gets is 3-4 minutes and it has always been that way and remember it is over 2.25 years old.

iPhone 4 is bullet fast. Longest backup is like 30 seconds. From loading it the first time it took like 1.5 minutes and blank to fully configured from a backup of my old phone.

iPad has been dirt slow since the first time I plugged it in period. Still is. Dirt slow. It is something in the iPad that is doing it. I hope the move to iOS 4 solves this. Two friends with one and theirs is exact same as mine. Super slow. Mine takes about 12-15 minutes if it has been a while since a back up.
