(When) Will Mac Pro Refurb prices drop?

Refurb prices are laughable in the face of the price drop.... basic refurb is at $2119 2.8GHz with 3GB RAM...student pricing is $2299 new for same thing with the 3.2GHz and 6GB RAM.

6 core refurb w/3MB RAM is at $3149 , brand new same specs (student pricing) is $2749 with 6MB Ram.

12 core refurb (2x2.66GHz) with 6GB Ram is $4249, brand new same specs $4579 with 12GB RAM.


Since there's basically no difference between the refurb and the new one, I'd be interested in picking up a discounted refurb -- but at the same price, the new one would be a no brainer (esp since you could extend your Applecare to 3 yrs on the new one, and I believe the refurb would be limited to the included 1 yr).

That is totally absurd. I hope no one is actually buying those. But I've stopped doubting the human race.
 
^^^ This. That's why refurbs (usually) are super cool. Not in this case.

Didn't realize this, I thought refurbs only had the 1 year. Very nice bonus for sure (but not that their current asking prices!).

Apple care is expensive and not really worth it for a desktop.

If you buy your desktop with a credit card, most card companies double the warranty, which gives you two years for free.

Apple replaced the internal 2TB hard drive just recently on my 2009 iMac i7, glad I had Applecare on it. Also I'm selling it now, with Applecare still good through 11/30/2012 -- which I imagine will bring me a good deal more $$ than the same machine with no warranty left. I definitely think Applecare is worth it if you are one who sells and buys new every 2+ years or so -- should get a good chunk of the cost back when you resell. IMHO of course.

I bought AppleCare on my quad G5 years ago. About 2 weeks before AC expired the fan died on it's graphic card. I brought it to the Apple store, and a week later they finally called me and said then needed to replace the whole machine..... Because of the graphic card? After doing my homework I knew the liquid cooled G5's were being replaced anyway as the gaskets were leaking over time. I didn't argue when the guy said they would replace my G5 with a new MacPro. I did say something to the effect of "Well, my quad G5 was top of the line when I bought it, shouldn't Apple replace it with a top of the line MacPro?" I didn't expect much but was shocked when he said, "Yea, that does make sense."
So I got a top of the line (at the time) 3.2Ghz 8 Core Mac Pro at no charge to me. It's still crushing video to this day. Thanks AppleCare! I haven't had to buy a new machine in 7 years because of you!

Apple Care can be bought at a massive discount online. I'm not talking about questionable Ebay purchases for the code only, I mean boxed retail Apple Care from an authorized Apple reseller.

The credit card trick is great and I took advantage of it when my iPhone power button broke inside year #2.

HOWEVER, this is a thread about refurbs. Those credit card doubling warranties do not cover used items, including factory refurbs. At least mine does not (VISA), perhaps Mastercard, Discover, or American Express do, but that would surprise me.

I heard about the scams.

How can you be sure you are buying a genuine Applecare online? And how much would the discount in regards to its cost at the Apple store be?

With desktops, you can go without, but when you look at the new retina display MBP (which is basically an all-in-one-piece soldered-together unit) you'd better take one, I agree.

Excellent! I bought all my photographic gear from B&H, shipping and packaging was always excellent. Might as well buy a computer there, too, and with Applecare at a discount.

B&H charges $244 for Applecare.

Yeah, that's not great. I seem to recall last year it could commonly be had for $180ish.

Fortunately you have up to a year after buying the Mac Pro to buy and register Apple Care, so you can wait for a sale.
