I have been waiting to buy a 24 inch iMac until Leopard came out. I am new to Macs and was wondering if anyone knows when Apple will start shipping Macs with leopard preinstalled?

Thanks!

probably right off the bat, once leopard is released.

No, actually not. Most likely it will take at least 3 weeks before the retail stores will ship Macs with the factory image of Leopard. They will in fact give the upgrade DVD's on the release date. It's a great possibility that the Apple online store will ship Macs with the Leopard image on the HDD but that's no guarantee, they may just give the upgraded DVD's as well. Anyways it doesn't matter it's not brutal like using the Vista upgrade system.

if they do the same as previous updates (which i assume they will), then only computers manufactured after the 26th will ship with leopard pre-installed.
these computers normally take 2-3 weeks to hit retail stores.

which means it's still about a month away if that's what you want.

I would not be so sure about that...

From what I have been reading since the official release date announcement, it seems that they may be shipping with leopard already like as of this week or something. I could be mistaken but that is the impression I get.

But they will still ship Leopard on the CDs themselves? So in essence I could just wipe the HD and install Leopard?

Speaking from prior experience, I ordered my Mac Mini when Tiger was released. And I received 3 disks. OSX 9, 10.3.7 and 10.4.0. The machine had 10.3 on it, but I never even saw it, since I just booted from 10.4, and ran amok from there.

I *may* have just found a buyer for this Mac. If so, I will buy a new Mini shortly, and try to do the same thing.

Yes, it'll ship WITH Leopard, but on DVD. You have to install it yourself. I had my iMac replaced under AppleCare right around when Tiger was released, and the replacement machine (brand new, not a refurb) came with the 10.4 install DVD and 10.3 on the HD.

What do you mean the factory image of Leopard, and Leopard's image on the HDD? Can you elaborate?

The OS pre-installed on the HDD from the factory is referred to as the "image". It's unlikely that on the day of Leopard's release (this Friday thankfully) that a person can just go into the Apple retail store and buy any Mac of their choice and get one with a factory installed image of Leopard on the HDD. The Apple stores carry too much stock and it's unlikely they have cleared it all so by Friday the only stock they carry is Macs with Leopard pre-installed. They generally give the install discs on the side when buying a new Mac with Tiger pre-installed.

If you order your Mac online then the chances are about 90% or better that Apple will ship it to you with Leopard pre-installed.

It's been stated either in the quicktime movie or on the Apple site in writing that when leopard goes on sale the current line of pc's they have in store when bought will get a cd/dvd of leopard. Until they factory fills the gaps after release this is how it'll be until all the old prepackaged boxes are sold.

The CTO's may or may not come but who knows. Your entitled to it if you buy it within the proper time frame. But again, why not accept 2 OS's rather than one. Tiger which is more stable and free Leopard.

Yeah - there was a lot of stuff broken by Tiger. Like keyboard drivers, printer drivers, several apps, etc.

Hopefully Leopard will be better, but I bet there will be stuff that does not work on day 1 - so having the ability to use Tiger may be handy.

Applestore Europe says Leopard disk is not full operating system

The Apple Store in Europe tells me the €8 "Up-to-Date" upgrade for those who buy an iMac now is missing an undisclosed number of functions. But they don't have any information about the differences between that and the full €129 Leopard pack. They also can't guarantee that you will get Leopard pre-installed if you buy a computer after Oct 26. If they include a Leopard disk after Oct 26 instead, will it be the full operating system or the cheapo upgrade?

Thanks to everyone that replied so far.

In a chat with a customer service representative on the Apple Store website, I was informed that after Oct 26 all macs would ship with a DVD of Leopard -- though he did not know if that would be the full $129 version or an upgrade version.

When I asked if he knew the date after which Leopard would be pre installed, he said that he did not. Moreover, that date is not usually announced. Meaning that if one were to order an iMac after Oct 26 it would be a crapshoot as to whether or not Leopard will be preinstalled.

According to the Apple web site ...

http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/

... the upgrade program ends December 29. So I am guessing that sometime between October 26 and December 29, all the systems will be shipping with Leopard. What that date is, is still up in the air…

Re: Tancat

Odds are no features are missing from the OS, it just won't install without Tiger already on the system.

This has been the case for Drop-In DVD's that come with Mac's when a new operating system comes out.

Agreed, the whole idea of the up-to-date discs is Apple giving courtesy to buyers of new Macs before the release date of Leopard. The install discs are not missing features, that would be stupid. As long as Tiger is installed on your Mac the up-to-date discs will allow for a full erase and install. I don't think they will work on systems running Panther for the obvious reasons.

I would imagine the up-to-date discs will only work on Intel Macs as there are no PPC systems eligible for the low cost upgrade.

Wondering about the "tiger has to be installed on the system" statement. That would be rather annoying if you ever need to re-install. Wouldn't it make more sense that the installer would just ask for a copy of the Tiger install media to be temporarily inserted in a drive before continuing the install? Just asking, because if the latter is not the case, what happens if your hard drive crashes and you replace it? You now have this "upgrade" disk, so you have to first install Tiger, then Leopard? That would make no sense at all to me.

I presume the new Macs will also come with a Tiger disc too? So in the event you wanted to wipe the hard drive in the future, you could install Tiger and then use the Leopard upgrade.

Also, although iLife is preinstalled, do we get a seperate disc for it too?

Thanks

You will still get the 2 system DVDs (one with Tiger, the other with iLife etc) that Macs are supplied with now, plus the Leopard upgrade disc in the box too.

i'll clarify what i said earlier a little:

computers manufactured after release day, 26th of october, will have leopard pre-installed. these generally take about 2-3 weeks to build and ship anywhere in the world. from around about the 14th of november, this stock will start to hit the shelves of retail stores and come through from online orders.

up until this stock hits shelves, that is, for all stock manufactured before the 26th of october, but purchased later than the 26th of october, a drop-in pack containing leopard will be included in the box with the tiger install discs.

any stock bought before the 26th, but after the first, will be eligible for the up-to-date mail in promotion, providing an update for a small shipping fee, as leopard will not be in the box.

hope this helps :)

What about orders placed on the 26th? Will they ship with the DVD definitely regardless of what time it is ordered at (considering it probably won't ship the same day)?

I would assume the Leopard DVD will be included with Mac orders placed before the 26th for shipping around that date. So I would imagine anyone who ordered their Mac's over the past few days would get the disc included. I ordered my iMac today so I hope this is the case. I would hate to get it then have to wait further to install Leopard.

There is no upgrade or cheapo version of Leopard missing undisclosed functions. There is only one version of Leopard. No need to worry. You might want to wait until it ships with Leopard, either pre-installed or included DVD, just so you don't have to order the up to date DVD separately. But to just stick in the Leopard DVD and do a clean install right out of the box is easy and will take less than an hour.
